Hi,
I have bought a antminer s5 and i need some help.

It is working for a few minutes but then it gives me a few X's on the ASIC Status and i think i know why but this is just a guess.
All of the youtube videos i see the people clip 4/4 in the top thing on the S5, i only have 2/4 on my power supply so i only put 2 into it.

Thats why i think it breaks sometimes but any ideas??

Thanks
J

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Yes I'd imagine it's not getting enough power. What PSU are you using?

EVGA do good psu's I used to have a corsair rm1000 but changed it to an EVGA Supernova 850 P2.

You'll need a 700watt or more psu really for the S5. You are cutting it a bit close to the psu limits with only a 650w.

Most psus reach peak efficiency at approximately 50-60% load but it varies on manufacturer.

With my psu is it because it's 650w or because it only has 2 of the cables? I looked at a 700w that doesn't have the cables and I'm not sure whether to buy it because it only has 2/4 cables to plug into the top of the s7?

You need to be clear what antminer you have an S5 or S7?

If you only have two pci-e cables coming from the psu and you need four then get molex to pci-e adaptor cables:-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trueway-Express-Power-Adapter-Cable/dp/B008AS7660

That way you can supply power to the other two sockets. It would be the cheapest option but may not work.

The antminer S5 draws 597w you haven't left yourself much room if you're using a 650w psu. You are putting the psu under a fair amount of strain and it may well be struggling to maintain the constant power draw. Bare in mind if you have it overclocked then the psu you have will not be enough.

On all the videos on YouTube they have 4 of the ports I only have 2 and so do a load of psu?

I believe your power supply doesn't have enough power on the rail that runs the PCI-E connectors to handle the load is the most likely issue.

Downclocking might get it into viable range.

Keep in mind that MOST power supplies do not have the capability of putting their full "rated" output into JUST the 12V output (some high-end Seasonic and EVGA supplies like the X-1250 and 1300-G2 are exceptions), and that becomes much more of an issue as the supply capasity gets smaller.

Molex -> PCI-E is a BAD IDEA when you're pushing the PCI-E connecter as hard as most miners do.
Doing that is marginal even when limiting the connector to PCI-E power ratings (which are very very conservative and not even close to the actual CONNECTOR power rating).

If your PS only has 2 PCI-E connectors on it, it almost definitely is NOT designed to handle the power draw of a 540+ watt miner like the S5.

Ok, i looked at some other ones that are like 800w and they only have 2, i have ordered a cable off amazon that allows me to have more connectors to it.

Also do you have any idea how i can find out how much it will cost to run? i need to find out?

Thanks

Find out your cost per kwh of electricity. British Gas is £0.13per Kwh.

Say you down clocked it and it pulled 500w at the wall. your miner would cost you approximately 6.5p per hour. 24x6.5= £1.56 per day. Which would cost approximately £46.80 a month.

Buy a plug in power meter and input your cost per kwh and the meter will do the rest.

I use this one :-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plug-In-Electricity-Power-Consumption-Meter-Energy-Monitor-Kwh-Watt-Calculator-/221850029527?hash=item33a74acdd7:g:-04AAOSwHnFVyd1O

and it works well.

ok thanks, i will get one of those.

I was wondering, i think the cost will be to high is there a way i can make it cheaper?
I was thinking of getting solar pannels on my shed and doing it like that but they are also expensive; too expensive.

You wont be able to make it any cheaper unless you underclock it more, but you'll hashrate. I assume you are on normal tariff energy and not the old school economy 7??  If you are the only way to be more profitable is to buy a better asic.

I currently have an S7-LN which runs 2.7Th but ive got it underclocked to run at a little over 2Th. That along with 3 gekkoscience usb miners running off a raspberry pi 3 draw 490watts at the wall from an EVGA 850 P2 (which has more than enough pci-e cables).

Hopefully will be upgrading to a an R4 or S9 at some point. but we will see.

There are profitability calculators out there to help you work out how much you will make/lose based on hashrate and power consumption.

Solar panels would be good, but as you said, they are expensive and you would need to store that power aswell. Having such a power hungry machine will ruin standard car batteries. Being in the UK what about a wind turbine?

Depends on the rating of you psu. Bronze, silver, Gold, platinum or titanium. But the generation of chips in the S5 is old now and probably not that efficient anymore. Even with my platinum psu I actually make a small loss every month but I'm doing it as a hobby rather than wanting to make a profit. Only way to definitely make a small profit at our electricity rates in the U.K. Is to buy an S9 or R4 as they are the most effienct chips at the moment.

There's a hardware selling section on the forum. You could post in there. But you'd make more money selling it on eBay.
