I remember reading a post about someone that used a pcie splitter to connect 3 GPU's to a single PCIe slot, but can't find it again.

Does anyone know how successful this is, and where I might be able to buy such splitters?

He is talking about PCIe Splitters, i.e., a PCIe x16 to 3 PCIe x1 splitter. The example post was in Pics of your mining rig. The guy was trying to hook 6x5870 on once board with x16 to 3-x1 splitter. He didn't manage to get it too work instead just went with 2 motherboards with 3 cards each.

Thanks, I'll do some reading of that thread. Do you know if it was specifically the splitter he was having problems with? in the post I was thinking of, the guy did have it working, so maybe it was different?

Certainly increases the possibilities if you could split up each slot into multiple cards. Otherwise it's just extender cables, though it doesn't look like I can get them locally at all, Aus, so have to wait weeks on delivery 8(

I actually have no idea. He didn't specify, just said it wasn't working. You should trying googling folding with splitters since they probably have some resources that aren't available here.

Sorry, my bad.  I was thinking extenders.  It was late.  Smiley

Thought about splitters. Haven't found any. Really cheaper and easier to get two MSI 790FX-GD70 MB's.

Google for RSC-R2UT-2E8R (2 way)
RSC-R2UU-A4E8+ (4 way)

They should work in theory, but splitting the power between power hungry graphics cards may not work out so well.  The spec allows for up to 75W across the bus I believe, hopefully a card with 2 auxillary power connectors and only 1 physical gpu die wouldn't draw enough from the board to cause any damage.

PCIe splitter, not power splitter.

plug into 1 pcie slot, connect 2 or 3 GPU's to it.

Is there anywhere to buy these?  I clicked the request price quote a week or two ago and they never responded to my email.

I got a replay to my quote request from them finally :

Quotation (YYYYMMDD-XX) (Prices in USD)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SKU                       Item                                                    Qty       Unit Price          Total Price

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SKU-040-01     Flexible x1 PCI Express 3-Way Splitter   1  $ 135.20            $ 135.20

                            (power from host card)

Freight              Shipping and Handling                                                            $ 79.86

------------------

Seems outrageously expensive, especially on the shipping and handling. Have not been able to find anywhere else that sells them. Might still be cost effective though compared to buying a 2nd system.
