According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

I think the biggest bang for your buck is the Radeon HD 5970 at the moment, if you can get it second hand.

What do you means exactly by "externally through the PCI on my laptop"?

how many MHPS does that give? I am looking for the highest rate as I can only run one of them

I mean PCI-e x16 to x1 adaptor, which enables you to plug an external graphics card into a laptop's ExpressCard slot

The problem with 5970 is that it's difficult to get. 7970 costs more, has similar performance and you can buy a new one, which means: warranty. I'm quite new to mining, so I don't know how fast will they break running 24/7.
Alternatively, you can wait for 7990, which is basically two 7970 cards in one.

Is it really practical to mine Bit's with a personal graphics card? The reason I ask is best electricity can be expensive, running a card uses up lots of electric too.

Show middle finger to system and then destroy it!

HD5970 HD6990 and upcoming HD7990 are dual GPU cards. It means there are two GPU chips on single card. If run from single x1 PCI-E link they will actually be like two cards running on half-link each. I'm not sure how much this will affect the performance.

HD5970 are very rare card now. HD6990 are probably more powerful than HD7970 but takes more electricity. HD7990 non-reference designs are available from few manufacturers in extremely limited availability.

For mining it will make sense to buy second-hand motherboard with two or three full-size PCI-E slots, install best GPU card You can get, add cheapest CPU for that socket, get cheap used 1 or 2GB ram and cheapest HDD You can get that can hold the operating system. Get powerful and efficient power supply that can feed the cards. Mining with laptop is not convenient. It will not be portable and will need constant external power for GPU card. Hope this helps.

i don't know how much mh/s a 7970 gets but i suspect it uses alot less electricity than a 5970. however a 7970 also costs alot more than a 5970. so you have to perform a cost/benefit analysis. 5970=cheaper and possibly higher hash rate but uses more electricity. 7970=more expensive and lower hash rate but less electricity. very difficult decision, make sure you give your brain a sufficient amount of rest before trying to make it. don't have an aneurism over it. your brain and your health are more important than money. remember the love of money is the root of all evil and the best things in life are free. so get money because it's necessary to live but focus most of your attention on other things. true happiness in this world comes from your relationships with other people. caring about other people is the most important thing in the world isn't it?
