I found this thread with a similar problem:

https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=6067.0

I'm not running Ubuntu though, I'm on Windows 7, running GUIMiner v2011-06-09 and Bitcoin 0.3.22-beta.

Anyone know why I get this error in the GUIMiner status bar?

Version 0.3.22 has a known problem with the getwork rpc command in wondows.

Roll back to version 0.3.21 and you will be fine.

This worked for me on one of my computers, thanks!
