I found this thread with a similar problem:

https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=6067.0

I'm not running Ubuntu though, I'm on Windows 7, running GUIMiner v2011-06-09 and Bitcoin 0.3.22-beta.

Anyone know why I get this error in the GUIMiner status bar?

Version 0.3.22 has a known problem with the getwork rpc command in wondows.

Roll back to version 0.3.21 and you will be fine.

This worked for me on one of my computers, thanks!

Solved my problem.  I at first rolled back to the older version of Bitcoin, which did NOT fix the problem.  Then I signed up for deepbit and everything started working again.  Guess it's a problem on slush's end.
