According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

To be honest, I don't think mining bitcoin will be profitable unless you can get your hands on an ASIC very quickly (which will be hard as there's people that ordered 6 months ago that still haven't recieved them)

It's currently far more profitable for most people to buy bitcoins rather than trying to mine them, although there is risk involved. The other option is to try and mine an alternative cryptocurrency (such as Litecoin/Terracoin etc) as the difficulty is still quite low. Still, with that budget you're gonna find it hard to make any sort of decent money.

It sucks but that's the way it is unfortunately...  Sad

Why to discourage people from trying things? Even tiny amount may still be worth a lot someday (for those who don't want to buy bitcoins for dollars or want to remain anonymous). I have started mining few days ago and even though return is very small it is exciting Smiley

There is hardware comparison page: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

If you are going to mine to make money -- that may be difficult at this stage of the game. But if you are going to mine to learn and as a hobby, go for it Smiley
