I used BitInstant and sent the money to my MtGOX account. This puts USD there for you to purchase BTC on MtGOX.

I did a straight local cash to MtGOX account.
  • This actually turns into a MoneyGram Bill Pay transaction that you can perform at all the local stores everyone touts as being able to buy BTC. Walmart doesn't actually sell you BTC.
  • If you go this route you will pay 3.99% + a flat $3.95 fee.
  • You can add up to $500 per transaction with a limit of $2,000 per per day, minimum amount is $20.
  • Be sure to do the math with the $3.95 fee because if you only buy $100 of BTC you will have just paid about 7% in fees.
