My Porsche sold today for ~300 Bitcoins! If this isn't proof that Bitcoin is a legitimate currency, then I don't know what is. The buyer purchased his initial Bitcoin investment at around $4 a piece so they got an amazing deal. I'm not sure if this is the single largest item sold for BTC, but I can guarantee it's the first $40,000 vehicle sold for ~300 BTC. The buyer wishes to remain anonymous, but I've asked a bitpay representative to come and post in the original thread to confirm the transaction occurred.

I dont get whats so special

Someone sold his Porsche for BTC instead of USD simply because some (early adaptor) had BTC he wanted to launder

This is no different than the Porsche owner selling it for USD and then converting that to BTC on MtGox, except that now there's money laundering involved

Thats why the buyer wants to remain anonymous

Wow! Money laundering no less? You forgot to mention all that child pornography in the trunk as well as the Mexican heads as proof of delivery...

Congrats to the OP! We get it!

They will be paying taxes on the estimated value of the car when they register it, so it's not completely void of fiat. No money laundering involved.

All I'm saying is the buyer wants to remain anonymous for an obvious reason

Lol nice save, kind of odd since you don't have to pay taxes at all on a car ownership transfer. But yes nice save nonetheless

Staying anonymous online is a good idea regardless.
You cant say his intention is bad.
Maybe he doesnt want people bothering him or selling his info. He obviously does well enough to constitute being bothered by salesmen, so maybe he is trying to avoid that.

This is awesome.

Only 300 BTC for a Porsche.

Three years ago 10,000 BTC for two pizzas.

Because he likes privacy? He isn't anonymous to everyone, the title must be transferred. He just doesn't want freaks on the internet knowing his business. I fully understand that position.

That's as much as a 'conspiracy' theory as me saying there is money laundering involved

We both can't proof it, we only can choose which one is the most likely

Lol I'm not saying he needs to reveal his complete identity to not be labeled anonymous, a forum username would suffice enough as not being 'anonymous'

Anyway I know it's not going to happen because of money laundering and I don't care, I'm just mentioning it because of its high probability

Might not be the first or largest car/btc tx, but probably the first with concrete proof.

Hey, that's great.  I reckon it will actually turn out to be a good deal on both sides in the short/medium/long term.

Next up, a house sold for bitcoins...

No clue what those folks above are complaining about.

Dude, that's great news, both for you and Bitcoin! (and for the new car owner as well)

Awesome!

In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

In other news, the sale of a $40,000 sports car for bitcoin is considered off-topic. I suppose if bitcointalk.org newcomers want to know about the latest bitcoin related news, they are going to have to go to the goods section or have a browse through Off-Topic. Shame...
