Walmart recently opened its Food Safety Collaboration Center in Beijing. The new initiative means the multinational is collaborating with IBM and Tsinghua University to improve food quality through the supply chain. It means the food safety partnership is utilizing blockchain technology to provide better food tracking and consumer safety.

Three Organizations Aim to Leverage Blockchain to Provide Better Food Quality

The traditional process of tracking food quality through the supply chain can be a difficult task. Over the years there have been many recalls involving contamination, bad ingredients, and uninspected crops. Many people believe rather than outside regulation the problems can be handled directly from the production and manufacturing process.

When IBM is the technological partner then the blockchain will probably hosted on the IBM Bluemix platform.
It competes with Microsoft's more well-known Azure platform. Unfortunately the article provides no words about which blockchain is used for the project.

I think this is  a welcome news as more and more big companies are utilizing the blockchain technology. Though this technology is quite new, more research is being done and its application is in wide array from banking/financial,now on food safety, trasportg, manufacturing and many more.

It's not really "welcome" for anything.  It's like saying that since the non-debt based greenback was printed on paper, that federal reserve notes printed on paper are also good.  Whatever corporations or governments do with the overused term "blockchain" is always going to be either zero benefit to you or highly negative.

Ya possible interest likely does not translate into a coin traded for profit on Poloniex etc.
Looking into the tech ?
Possible they would roll their own private solution and it would have little interest to Investors unless you were holding the Wallmart or IBM stocks maybe.

FUD first & ask questions later™
