How come sometimes my transactions take a long time to confirm even if I pay the recommended or higher tx fees?

This past week has seems to be quite slow, I have some transactions both large and small that took several hours to confirm.

Is it something to do with the network?

Hi, can you provide the tx id of your transaction?
I personally don't have any problem with confirmation time, sometimes the fee that i provided is higher than recommended fee in order to get fast confirmation, yeah  the highest fee you provide the fastest confirmation you get by the way you might check this site https://bitcoinfees.21.co/ to know which fee you should use.

The bitcoin network sometimes slows down if blocks are not found at the regular 10 mins on average.

If it happens that two blocks are found say an hour apart, more and more transactions start piling up. These only get cleared if the blocks are found faster than 10 mins. I also had a few transactions with recommended fee take hours to confirm, but once the blocks started being found they were quickly confirmed.

In some instances, the recommended fees do not guarantee you faster confirmations. It all depends on how many people are paying those same fees or even higher fees. In a scenario where everyone bumps their fees, the limitations are still applicable, and no preference is given for these higher fees. https://blockchain.info/charts/n-transactions

It is said, that Bitcoin can confirm 7 transactions per second, but it is somewhere around 3 transactions per second.  Roll Eyes

Some new developments might improve this problem soon, for example SegWit and Lightning Network. ^smile^

There's no such thing as "recommended fee", what you can do is try to outbid everyone else making transactions at the same time as you.

Network as been at maximum capacity for almost a year now, this type of congestion originates the situation you're describing, if you want fast confirmations you should check out other coins.

is there a site or anywhere I can check to see the "status" of the built up transactions?

Thanks for the informations.

at the time when you posted this thread, there are currently around 15mb of transaction waiting to be included in a block and it is around 28k transaction IIRC. so it will need around 15 blocks for those transactions to get all confirmed. basically if you want to get included in the very next block, you should pay higher fees than anyone else has paid specially if there are lots of transactions waiting to get confirmed

If you add higher fees then the issue of delay in confirmation time can be resolved and it may not take more then 10 minutes for the transaction to get confirmed and may be core development team will work on it in future.

Wow this is really bad

https://btc.com/stats/unconfirmed-tx

I dont follow the developer notes and anything like that but what kind of upcoming changes or improvements is core dev going to be releasing to help solve or alleviate this issue a bit?

This can't be good for the bitcoin economy if transactions can be delayed for up to 12 hours or more when some people are expecting transactions to close deals within a few hours at most. This really hinders the conveinence that BTC has suppose to offer, and it causes a lot of frustration too.

Segwit is coming soon. The target release date for 0.13.1 which contains segwit is targeted for a Friday or Saturday release (Thursday if we are really lucky). Signalling for Segwit will begin on November 15th after which it will require one 2016 block retarget period where 1916 blocks signal support for segwit followed by another 2016 block retarget period as a grace period. After that segwit will activate and we will get scaling benefits as more users and wallets switch to using segwit.

This is great news. Hope the transition to it will be smooth.

You should wait, sometimes confirmations takes a long duration.
If it passed 7 days with no confirmations I think you will get a Refund
