Hi,

So I'm still relatively new to this; I signed up just to ask this question that I can't seem to find a thread for.

Would the EVGA 1000GQ PSU (http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=210-GQ-1000-V1) have enough PCIe's (10 needed) to power an S9? I know I'd be underpowering but I'm planning to underclock anyways.

So VGA x 6 (6-pin PCIe + 2) = 2 rails
SATA 1, 2, 3, = 3rd rail

Left over with PERIF-1 and 2x CPU-1's - Not sure if these would be enough power (or any) for the main board - or if it'd even work.

I'm intentionally trying to stay under 1000W due to power constraints (although if the EVGA-1300 might work I'd possibly be open to that?) - I know the EVGA 1600 works, but they're a bit pricier and I don't want that much power in the first place.

Trying to stay with one (1) single PSU per S9. I'll have about 3x S9's to power. I only want one PSU per S9, so I don't want to combine 3x of these into 2x S9's...

Open to other suggestions, but trying to keep it low key (1050W or less; modular preferred; eco mode preferred).

Thanks in advance!!

You can't choose a PSU that is able to provide less wattage than it is needed to run Antminer S9.
For example the S9 12.93Th/s version takes 1275W (12 VDC).

Choose for example 1500W EVGA or Bitmain APW5.

And even though OP said he did not want something pricey on PSU's.  They tend to hold value decent if a good quality.  So you can use for multiple generations of miner's or sell them off eventually.   It is nice to have some good quality PSU's that have already ROI'ed even though upfront cost is higher.

I have had some PSU's that have been with me for year's.  They are something I never recommend to go cheap on.  Also on Asic gear server PSU's have kinda taken over.     My ATX's have went into ETH gear at this point.

The EVGA 1300 G2 or Seasonic X1250 would be enough to run one of the LOWER HASH (11.x TH) S9s, I wouldn't even think about anything less as you will likely fry the PS or miner, and the setup flat out won't WORK at best.

Don't even try those on one of the 12TH+ S9 units.

It's a matter of the MINER needs that much power, not that you can try to run it on less.

If it wasn't for the CRAZY high pricing, I'd recommend you look at the R4 instead which probably WOULD work on a good 1000 watt PS.

Other option is to use more than one PS per miner, but that gets complicated on the "feed them power" side.

You would still need a buffer for surges. Like HagssFIN, most people with a 1500W power supply for a S9.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies - been very helpful!

I should add that I'm in a dorm right now and would rather underclock to be safe. Cost isn't really a factor for PSU's, as long as they will do. I've contemplated the EVGA-1600s but fear they might break the circuits in my dorm.

Here's my setup:

2x separate 15A/120V circuits (front/main)
2x 15A/120V on a SINGLE circuit

I've messed with some S7's and have been able to run them continuously underclocked at 550Mhz/475/450/400 respectively yielding 4.7Th/s, 3.3, 3.0, 2.7. I plan on building a duct to expel any hot air out the window as this is overwhelming at the moment.

So a few people recommended the EVGA-1300's, which is fine. However, how do I get the 10x PCIe's needed to plug in all 10? There are only 6 VGA's (realized later this was the same problem with the EVGA-1000).

Right now I'm powering S7's with ANTEC TPQ-1200's (1200W) with 7 PCIe cables; each hash board is receiving only 2 PCIe's. I imagine that wouldn't do for the S9's, or would it?

Connected to Monster HTS-5100 MK-II's and Panamax MX5102's for surge protection.

Edit: I'm willing to get EVGA-1600's IF people can confirm (1) It won't fry, short circuit, or burn the whole building down (or pose any other risk), and (2) That my 120V/15A limitations would be enough. Again, I don't want overkill... but also don't want to screw S9's over.

Which is why I specified the LOW hash S9 batches for an X1250 or 1300 G2. They're WAY too marginal for the high-hash batches.

IMO trying to run an S9 in a DORM is a bad idea - going to be pushing the circuits way too hard and way too loud.

The loudness is one hell of an annoying factor in the S9 if you are planning to run it in your dorm.
I would suggest waiting for the sales of Antminer R4 by Bitmain or AvalonMiner 7.0 by Canaan Creative (AvalonMiner7.0 is not yet released and we can't be sure about the noise, but Avalons have been reasonable in the sense of noise in the past).

Great. And I thought the S7's were loud... are the S9's even louder, by a lot?

It's the fans I presume, so what if I just underclocked to 500-500Mhz? With a heat duct pushing hot air outside and A/C, could I afford to underclock the fans?

I currently have a stash of S7's running under the bed @65% fan speed and it's bearable. The heat isn't.

The same or maybe a little louder.

Is there some sorta noise-isolating padding that I could use without compromising airflow? Because right now 4x S7's are okay, but the fans are at 50-65% and they're under beds. They're also underclocked.

Or even better, a silent fan mod?

i have used lots of materials   this is decent stuff.

AWESOME - Thank you!! Would it go around the insulation pipes I assume (rear exhaust)? Not the actual rig itself (duh), unless I were to do the front fan as well?

It's the fans I presume

Should be almost identical, same fans and near-identical cooling setup (except for the S7 batches that tried to get by with 1 fan, those should have been a HAIR quieter).

Someone tested 71db (1m SPL) vs 66db (@1m also) and that is quite a difference (considering it's on a log scale). Doesn't matter now anyways... a bit too late; got some good sound/heat-proofing (and flame-resistant) advice off this forum though, but if anyone has any more knowledge to spare, that'd be appreciated!

I wish you all the best, but remember that I recommended on waiting for the R4 or the AvalonMiner 7.0

Right, and I've been looking for R4's for quite a while. Will definitely grab batch #2.

Btw, someone else mentioned this, but can these S9's ever catch on fire (assuming some air ventilation, and auto shut-down @80C)?

Original poster, you're going to start a fire and burn down your dorm. I'm fine with you dying from the fire but for god's sake, think of other innocent lives who will die a horrible death all because of your stupid greed. For f*ck's sake, just STOP with your willfully selfish actioin. Take your fire hazard S7's and shove'em up your greedy ass!!!

Avalon 721 has been annnounced - and it looks like that 1000 watt PS would work on it.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1673843.0

Dunno why they changed their naming though.

Old thread I know,
but you can't underclock an S9, so drop that idea right now.
