I have been using the same version of electrum(v2.6) for quite a time now. I could not find any option to update it within the application.
I found that v2.7.11 is the latest version and there is security risk in the old versions (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1663652.0).

So, how to update Electrum on windows ?

If you used the installer, just install the new version over the old version. If you are using the stand alone version, use the new version and copy the wallet file if needed.

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

Just save first and backup your private keys and seeds before you start updating it.. if you are using portable just extract and open it and it will works well. for electrum setup make sure you have a backup and download the latest electrum and install if your wallet is gone you can open file and look for appdata roaming and find your default wallet..

This is kind of an obvious thing, but worth mentioning if you haven't considered it.  Anytime you are downloading a new version you want to make sure that the download you get comes from Electrum (is genuine).  You can check it by verifying the PGP sig that Thomas puts on all his work.  There are other lessor ways to verify as well.  Frankly I am not quite as concerned as I used to be since I use a hardware wallet (meaning Electrum never sees my private keys) in tandem.  Its always good OPsec to verify software, and especially one that is handling your crypto currency!

I have never seen any issues with installing the new Electrum over the old.  The posts above regarding backing up your wallets and stuff are good especially if you need to keep your comments, etc....  Electrum makes this all a breeze as long as you are "rock solid" with having your SEED for any wallet.
