I think out of all the alt-currencies it is currently in third place after bitcoins in litecoins in terms of potential. It seems to be the most innovative, and has a seemingly professional developer

Not really looking to get into yet another exchange right now. Too much hassle.

Does anyone know how to calculate the current amount of ppcoin in circulation? Because of proof of stake i can't easily calculate the amount minted so far.

It's greater than 18 million and PoW block reward is ~600.  There is also PoS rewards but it is only 1% per year.

You can use a block explorer to check this.  The one I was using yesterday seems to be down now.
