Is there a chance they are lost? It's been 3 hours now, but i was informed it would take a number of hours for them to appear, I'm just worried my impatience has lost me a few bob.

Cheers.

All is good. The transactions are all stored in the blockchain, you just have to download it to view/use it.

Just wait and you should see the coins come in.

You don't send bitcoins to a wallet, you send them to an address. The transaction is recording the blockchain by miners, and has nothing to do with whether or not bitcoin-qt is running or not, or synced or not.

The only thing that you have to wait for is for bitcoin-qt to catch up with the blockchain to spend, because it can't spend funds it until it knows about them.

If you sent then to the right adress, no. They are still in the blockchain, go to blockchain.info and search your adress to make sure!

Right, yes this makes sense now.  Still coming to terms with all angles.  Cheers for making it more clear to me.
