Its faster to download the blockchain directly. If you have problems connecting to other nodes you can try to connect to mine. IP is 188.68.53.44.

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

Found this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1310261.msg16205238#msg16205238
I have freedownload manager http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ so when clicked on magnet link it directly started downloading file which can be way faster than downloading from torrent client.

I personally don't think downloading bootstrap.dat from other sources is safer other than bitcoin.org. However in official bitcoin.org link it seems it is 2 years old here https://bitcoin.org/bin/block-chain/ and also downloading full blockchain from official software is way faster than torrent.

@shorena I set up 0.13.1 on an Ubuntu laptop three days ago on 24/7 with port 8333 forwarded. It is three days now and still downloading. I am using wifi rather than ethernet is that the problem? My internet is very fast so no problem there. I expected the blockchain to download much faster.

Yes, put it in the bitcoin.conf as:

Code:
addnode=188.68.53.44

or to avoid a restart, write the following in the dev console

Code:
addnode 188.68.53.44 add

-snip-

Hard to tell, my first guess would be WiFi as well.

Thanks I will stop by Radio Shack and get a spare cable to see if there is a difference.

is it not a bit dodgy to be downloading the blockchain from anywhere other than another node who has it, surly that defeats the point?

The data from the bootstrap.dat still gets verified same as you would every block that gets downloaded via the client. Thats also why it isnt faster anymore. The bottleneck is the verification for almost all systems and internet speeds, esp. for later blocks. A pre verified blockchain is also offered by some, but - as you suggest - this could potentially be dangerous.
