First look at their offers, usually scammer gives higher commission than other site, but doesn't rule out possibility they gives normal commission but in the end they turn into scam.
So you need to dig deeper, research about the company profile, proof image if they real doing their business. Dig deeper to the developer is +points, because I ever see scam site which have company profile picture, and information, but they used pictures from google.
And in first place the site security is the most thing to considering, look at their site, have SSL certificate or not. You should scan the site first, maybe the site contain malware in the first place.

A very common scam you will see on these forums is someone will register a brand new account similar to a Trusted member with a special character at the end. For instance Theymos they would do Theymos' or slight variation. Then message people pretending to be that person. It is common in Exchange services because they will see a person post in the thread they want to sell Bitcoins, and the fake account messages them asking them to send the BTC to their address.

Another scam will be PayPal chargeback or Credit Card chargeback. People sell Bitcoins for PayPal and months or weeks later the charge is reversed because it was using a stolen credit card or the owner said the charge was unauthorized. You lose the Bitcoins and the Cash.

More scams involve ponzi schemes, mining and investment scams where you are promised a return on your investment and they shut the site down.

Also exchanges and casinos that shut down or claim to be "hacked" stealing all of user's funds.

It is best not to keep all your money on a exchange or online wallet.

First , don't use any website listed on Investor-based games section as 100% of them are a scam. Gambling is never recommended but If you do gamble then try to use services that are known for long time and don't use new services , If you do ... don't deposit big amounts. Same applies for cloudmining companies.
When it comes to trading , you should be fine as long as you don't trade with shady members - low rank - with reversible payment methods like Payoneer , PayPal etc.

Cloudmining is almost always a scam, and in the few instances where it is not, you are better off just buying bitcoins.

Any "investment" that purports to pay 1%,  or so, per day is a scam.

Onecoin is a scam.

Buying something from an anonymous person and paying with a cash deposit at a bank could be part of a scam where you and a bitcoin trader are the victims.

- Ponzi HYIP schemes: When you find a site offering very good offers to be true, like lifetime investiment back in days, weeks of few months. Probably these schemes don't last for much time and you don't reach ROI.

- Fraudulent negociations: When you will buy or sell something and the buyer doesn't pay you or the seller don't give you the product or the service hired. Easy to prevent this scam using an escrow.

- Hack: The worse of all, because it doesn't depend of your only choices. Your account can be invaded or stoled. There are some steps to prevent yourself, but nothing 100% guaranteed. Worse hack is when they steal your BTCs from the wallet.

no matter what you hear learn how to use google Smiley
in 90% of the times with a quick search you can always find enough information about things you encounter that helps you make up your mind about whether or not they are scam. for example if you google the name of a cloudmining service or the term cloudmining in general with the term "scam" you surely will find topics about it which you can read like this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=878387.0

and if you didn't find you can ask about them on forums.

always keep in mind that when something looks too good to be true, it surely is not.

if they offering something big reward in short term with small investment, i think its not make sense because we all know that investment is like what we have to invest, that is what we get later. if we make big invest, then we can get big return too and it should not in short term. i use this to know if the programs is real or not but again its not guarantee, just some analysis from me.

There are so many scams it is impossible to name them all, if you want to find the ones that people are falling for at the moment (which may be the hardest to spot) then go to the Trading Discussion > Scam Accusations of this forum

All the scams and ponzis usually teach some same universal lessons. So, before investing our money just remembering those will save us all the times. One prime lesson must be : no one will give us free/effortless money.

Just check for core business concepts, if you are comfortable with the way of source of funds generation, you may invest as the chances will be less for getting scammed.

I got scammed by faucets, cloud minings, hyips and ponzi schemes etc.
Just remember one thing that the websites providing more payouts than usual are mostly scam, but even if a website is offering valid offers you should have a check on its history to know if its reputation is good or not.

When you see some service si offering something that TOO GOOD to be true, like let's say 20% of your deposit everyday for a month. They will make you invest and will wait until a lot of people have invested, then they'll just go for a maintenance and take all of peoples invested bitcoins.

Need some spare btc for a new PC that can at least run Adobe Dreamweaver.

20% is way too much, even if a site offers 3% daily for a month it is still not trustworthy, because how come a site can earn every investors 3% of there investment? If i invest 5btc into their website, how will they manage to pay me 3% of that everyday until a month or more? Basically any site promising returns without doing anything should be considered a scam, whether they are offering 2% or 20% a day.

i have witnessed many bitcoin scams but invested on minimum of them. i didnot remembered the site names but i can tell their pattern. once they have opened a wallet something named btcera which gives 3% monthly for using their wallet and other are a cloudmining site with a package system. if you buy a higher package then you will get faster income and you have to claim it every 15min

I usually see the offer, if I think that the offer is too good to be true then I will definetely avoid it. Other ways, doing some researches before joining any sites. I'm sure you can fine some reviews or comments about the sites, check if there are too many bad reviews then stay way from it.
Beware and be smart on anything you want to do online.

A very common scam is people will go through exchange threads and find people who have recently done trades with other people and contact them wanting to do a trade with them as well.

Literally every time I do an exchange on this forum I always have 1 or 2 people private messaging me wanting to do some sort of trade for their paypal like I offered some sort of open invitation to trade with others after I have already done what I wanted.

some of common scams i've encountered was a site where you can get free btc with 0.0000004 BTC/min. and they offer to upgrade your account in order to withdraw your btc and then after a few days you upgraded your account your waiting for your cashout in nothing. stay away from sites where you're gonna invest and then they will double it. much better if you invest your money in some gambling sites which is good because of stable profit

It will be very hard, because many scams are very developed. Firstly check if webpage have real address, not just E mail. Secondly check, if they give update on webpage - sometimes it can be old scam. I also would suggest check if webpage provide true info or just scam everywhere.

common sense will cover most of it. as far as i'm concerned if anyone asks for my coins then i'm gonna assume it's a scam. end of.

the only circumstances where that's different is an established exchange, gambling site or payment processor. everyone else will be a thief.

that goes for 'investments' 'securities', cloud mining, web wallets, its all bullshit. no legit company is offering any interest nor can they guarantee any returns.

it's totally natural that bitcoin will attract scum. assume everyone is and you'll be fine.
