The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

Perhaps you could set up an ssh tunnel to a machine that will act as a proxy to your mining pool?

Stop. Do you have permission? If you don't know the solution I doubt you are with an IT unit.

If mining threatens your BASE method of income don't do it on the sly.

KK. Yes you can get around this - my question is can you afford to if it means losing job/disciplinary action.

Exactly, when you are asking these questions you are not IT department. You should think first, as most companies will take illegitimate use of their hardware as an serious offense.

Having said that, most likely there are VPN solutions out there, that work with bitcoining, though if they locked down the network so far that you can't do it by default... Chances are they will catch the strange traffic very quickly.
