Hello, feeling a bit foolish.
I clicked instant payment on deepbit, but the address was an old wallet, long gone.

Anything I can do, it will never be redeemed.

If you don't have that wallet/the private key, bye bye bitcoins. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible.

What would happen if the Wallet address did not exist at all? (incomplete copy of address, typo etc)?

I guess it wouldn't validate.

The wallet is long gone.
I think there could be some useful improvements, like warning the user that the address has never been seen, are you sure, etc.

It would not be a valid address and the client (i suppose all clients...) would not let you make the transaction. I suppose it apply to deepbit too.

Note that the "an address not exist" thing only apply to a mistyped address. If you insert a valid address wich does not exist, you can happily send the bitcoins to it, in a black hole

You could try to find the wallet. Old harddisks can be fixed. Deleted files restored. And remember to search all your backups.

Bitcoin transactions are final once they're confirmed in the blockchain, so there's no way to reverse the transaction without the wallet keys, sorry.

It most likely wouldn't send a typo, as i think its 1 in several billion chance of accidentally creating a valid address.

With the old address they are gone unless you can do a recovery of the file.

I always triple check. Super paranoid when sending.

OK, feeling hopeful.   I found the wallet in an old Carbonite backup.
I have restored that to a working bitcoin location, and am now synching.
It's taking forever to sync, but fingers crossed.

Likely to be successful?

Likely to be successful?

If that wallet has the address in question?

Extremely likely to be successful.

They finally arrived.  9.08 shiny bitcoins.
Happy ending.

Three cheers for online backups.

Not your addresses.  Your wallet.

You need to have a backup copy of the file that contains the private keys.  If all you have is a copy of your addresses, you will be unable to spend the bitcoins.
