This morning my bitcoin client stated that it generated 0.93 blocks and was waiting on confirmations or something.

It then recieved 120 confirmations and credited 0.93btc to my account.

Please see the first line in my client:

How did I do this? I thought you could only generate in blocks of 50 bitcoins.

I did try solo mining for around a day around 2 weeks ago before I found out about pools. Other than that 1 day all of my processing has been exclusively in pools.

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

Did you ever mine for Eligius? That pool pays members directly from the found block; instead of 50 BTC going to one address, the correct share is given to members who have at least 1 BTC on balance, or any address that hasn't been paid in two weeks.
