the first thing is there are more paypal and usd dollar user compare to bitcoin users, ebay amazon or any big shop still haven't see the potential of bitcoin, and i think they are afraid of the negative reputation of bitcoin which will affected their reputation, but i believe one day ebay will be accepted bitcoin, if bitcoin got a good reputation and there are already a lot of people use bitcoin

For a long time I have been reading that it's China who controls the Bitcoins market. 60-80% of sellers on eBay are from China. So my question is why don't they accept payments in Bitcoin and why they insist on the paypal only? Shouldn't they be changing according to times? Or they can't change due to regulations?

Simply because you've read that, you can't assume it's true. There are a lot of hoaxes and speculations floating around regarding China that are reposted by journalists without verifying their validity. If you ask me, I would be very cautious interpreting the market share of the Chinese exchanges.

It's true that China controls the mining landscape. But from this fact you can't infer that Bitcoin is widely used by the average Chinese population. Even if there are a lot of users, their percentage in relation to the total population is very small. Therefore the probability that the average Chinese eBay seller is also a Bitcoiner is low.

Apart from that, eBay is restrictive regarding payment options and tries to push the use of services of its sister company PayPal.

HI don't know about eBay. In I buy from the global site eBay. Com and there only paypal is accepted. Bitcoin is the need of the hour and I wish more and more sites added the option of Bitcoin. So far not many are accepting it, and some are yet not convinced by it. So let's see if that happens soon, not only on eBay but all sites.

Ebay never gonna accept bitcoin for sure as bitcoin is direct threat to their payment platform (paypal). If they start accepting bitcoin how they gonna handle charge back issues.

Never is a long time my friend... You want to tell me, a company will stick with PayPal when the world goes Bitcoin? ... eBay can incorporate

Bitcoin as a payment option tomorrow, if they want to. If they want consumer protection, they can just force people to use third party payment

processors. These companies have to adhere to strict KYC/AML regulations and they can block people's accounts, if something goes wrong.  Wink

Ebay has a ton of exposure. Honestly a lot more than bitcoin. PayPal is owned (but now a separate entity) by eBay. They most likely won't be accepting BTC anytime soon if it's still looked at as competition. If PayPal starts accepting bitcoin as a currency then we're golden.

Bitcoins on ebay would be great for sellers. Shit, if I wanted to, I can go hop on ebay right now, order a 2000$ item, get it shipped, sign for it, take a photo of me holding the item and send it to the seller, leave a positive feedback ... and then file a chargeback and I would win the case. No joke. The chargeback situation on ebay is bad, which is why I stopped selling there. I only got hit for $50 (loss of $15 total), but that was enough evidence for me that ebay/paypal is not a platform that I am comfortable receiving money on

I am trying to implement ways of accepting bitcoins in my offline business.
I just feel like it is way too confusing for people. I spent about half an hour trying to explain it to the main and she didn't know wtf I was trying to say lol.

I think even they have large bitcoin farming ebay can not be still trust bitcoin or buyers are not trusting to use bitcoin since it is new in their ear they are using paypal instead or credit card because it is for safety purposes costumers always the service of charge back or dispute. unlike in bitcoin after you send you can not recover back your bitcoin..This is i think the reason.

Can some one link to where ebay gives out the demographic breakdown for clients,I was unable to find anything in a quick search.

Will have to look into how safe those localbitcoin giftcards are that Bayarea mentions. Hoping it is not just a American thing and us Canadians can take advantage as well.

doesn't anyone know their history? all the endless china ban crap in 2013/14 was because bitcoin was starting to be used for commerce in china. the chinese government decided that was a bad idea and put a halt to it. after that they were free to trade it and collect it, not to use it to pay for anything.

i'm sure businesses could accept it but if volumes started to grow they might get shut down. and there's no way ebay would allow it out in the open. no protection for buyer or seller and that's their main thing.

I think it can be the same as amazon. that has alternative like purse.io for now we are still waiting for other site that bitcoin can be accepted as payment or even alternative if we are need to buy or shopings online like lazada or ebay which is until now no news or plan that they will added bitcoin as acceptable payment..
For now for customers safety they will still prefer to use paypal instead and i hope owner of purse.io to start a new business or ebay added to purse io..

Honestly I think It's like a kind of policy by ebay that's why they don't accept payments in Bitcoin or may be costumers safety purposes they use paypal or credit card instead of BTC There have another point charge back issues suppose they accept it they are not only unable to handle it but also it can be direct threat to their payment platform (paypal) for Crypto popularity.

Hi guys,
what would be the pros and cons of letting customers pay with bitcoins on Ebay? (especially if the transaction is cross-border)

Pros :

~ It gives you a alternative, if other payment options are not available to you for some reason.
~ Bitcoin has been the best performing currency for many years
~ You pay less for the transaction, due to smaller fees < No banks or remittance services needed >
~ Cross border transfers < remittance > is cheaper.
~ The transactions are fairly quick and you do not have to wait for bank transfers to go through to fund your account.
~ You can use them as a reliable Escrow services.

Cons :

~ You will have to rely on eBay as a third party and Bitcoin was designed not to use third parties.
~ eBay will add fees for their services, which will make Bitcoin transactions more expensive.
~ eBay can manipulate transactions, like they are doing now. < centralized control >

but with the help from third party, we can buy product in eBay and pay with bitcoin. i think only few people in china which is using bitcoin and  maybe its only under in 50% from their population. and for the eBay itself i think eBay will make integrated with bitcoin soon and paypal is still best option payment because paypal is really secure and protect their members when they go shopping.

the thing that usually people forget when they talk about bitcoin payment for buying from individuals (not a trusted and well known service) is the charge back option.

when someone wants to buy from ebay they want to have the option to charge back if the seller sent them a bad product, like broken, wrong thing, ... and they can not do it with bitcoin.

and that only is restricted to buying from individuals because we can not trust them ever even if they have a good history but a real place which is running a business is different for example you never think twice when buying things from Steam, or pay for your VPN service with bitcoin.

Are you sure about that percentage of Chinese users of eBay?
Because if we're talking about online shop here, there is 'Alibaba' which is owned by China.
That one has most of its users being Chinese, for sure.
