I have a cool tip for everyone here:

I am STUNNED that a few weeks ago Apple stopped private labelling their computer monitors.

Apple is now officially out of the computer monitor reselling biz...

The truth is LG has been making Apple's monitors for years...slapping  Apple's logo on their private label monitors (with a few tweaks).

So what does this mean for us?

We now get "Apple quality" monitors for half price.

I review products for a living...

And I buy them with my own money (so no one can control my reviews)...

For me, the biggest bang for the buck right now is this:

LG 4K UHD 27UD88-W 27" monitor (with USB-C)

Apple used to sell this exact monitor for over $2,000.00 (it was the Apple Cinema Display).

But now Amazon is selling it for under $700.

Go grab it ASAP...

It is like having this HUGE retina screen that connects to any desktop or laptop computer.

It was designed for gamers, so the lag is almost zero.

It is 4K, so the graphics are gorgeous.

The text is crisp.

It has every imaginable port to plug in with - including USB-C...

It even doubles as a USB hug - yep, plug in a keyboard and mouse!

There is one downside (but I think it is actually good)...

The monitor does not include audio speakers...

No problem, search for the Logitech 3.5mm Jack Compact Laptop Speakers, Black (Z130) - the best $17 external speakers I have ever reviewed.

to be fair this is a 3840 x 2160 screen, so yeah more expensive than 1080p.  IDK though, do I want to game at 4k 60hz (and i cant do that anyway with my gear), OR get an 2560x1440 @100 or 144hz.  I cant decide so i'll just leave that money in my wallet, which is empty anyways

Does anyone actually make a 3840x2400? Besides the 15-year-old IBM T221, I mean. 16x9 kinda sucks.

I think that is what the mammoth HP 31" monitors provide as well. Not sure if still made and the 2 we have came with a now 5-year old Nikon inspection system..

I am now in love with the UHD aka 4k TV's... Got 32" one for the HMI on our latest laser test bed and it is  -- marvelous!. Talk about real estate to spread out the various windows I have open... 4 mo ago it was like $380.

I think I paid $200 or so for my "27" - on sale from NewEgg a couple months back. Similar ASUS model to the one linked, but can do 1280 vert not just 1024 or I'd have never considered it - and had I realised it was a wide-screen I'd have passed on it.

 IMO 16x9 sucks 'cause it's too wide - I'd actually prefer 1:1 if anyone still made those, or at least 5:4 (1280x1024 aspect ratio), but can live with 4:3

My favorite monitor I've ever run was a 20" CRT I got for $5 used, that would run 2048x1536 and I could crank it down to about 16" diagonal. Widescreen doesn't annoy me because it's too wide, it annoys me because it's not tall enough. 1440 or 1536 vertical would be really nice. I do like that a lot of monitors now are running high density; it's about time someone realized 96ppi sucks noodles.  My 9-year-old laptop has a 15.4" 1920x1200 and it's great. The computer I'm using right now has three screens, custom-made 1920x1200 17" LCDs, which is a perfect fit for my desk setup and enough pixel space to be efficient, and it cost me $200 in parts two years ago; it's a project I'd pondered since 2009. Affordable consumer tech is finally catching up.

A pair of about 30-inch 3480x2400 would be nice, but I'd have to modify my desk's overhead shelf height to hold 'em. Not that that's difficult, just annoying.

Yes I have the AOC 28" 4K 144hz monitor mine does 3840x2160.. got it for 339

Heard that Dell use to do the same thing. So this is nothing really new.
These companies outsource their tech to the highest bidder so they can charge the end customer the highest markup rate they can.

When I was doing LCD refurb I got pretty used to identifying Dell models by the last letter in the full model number - b, s, f, and t were common. Based on innards I'd guess S to be Samsung and B as BenQ, not sure on F and T. They each had their own unique problems, but at least they were predictable - most often failed capacitors, and always the same general ones for each manufacturer. Nice to know they opted for the cheapest possible parts that would statistically still work past the warranty date; that fact kept food on my table for the better part of three years.
