Who/what are they? How easily could the Bitcoin infrastructure and idea be duplicated by a competing currency? How would/does a competing digital currency this affect the value of bitcoin in the long term?

Too many failures to keep track of.

How easily could the Bitcoin infrastructure and idea be duplicated by a competing currency?

Technically it is extremely easy.  The tricky part is convincing others that they should value your alternate currency instead of bitcoin.
