well depends. Claymore have dev fee so i don't know if you consider it freeware. Anyway performance gain is much larger than that dev fee. But if you don't want to mess with it there are many other completely free miners but with a little less performance

It is a good software. It does not support dual mining as the ZEC mining requires both intensive usage of core and memory.
