I previously got my ModMiner working with cgminer, it would mine for an hour but then it would shut down due to overheating.

However, now, whenever I plug in the ModMiner - all 5 lights flash rapidly as soon as it powers up (the light on each board, and the light on the main board also).

I'm not sure what changed - what would cause this?

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

not really sure but my guess is either power issue or the overheating has caused serious damage to the chips

Hmm, the power supply was working fine before, but I do notice that the fans seem to run quite slow now.

I hope not, cgminer monitors the chip's temperature and shuts them down if they overheat.  I spoke to the cgminer people and they said that it should be ok to leave it running because of this.
