PCI-E 1X Question

I want to add another gpu in with my 7850, but unfortunately I only have one PCI x16 slot. I want to stick it on one of my many open PCI 1x slots, but after a lot of surfing around I'm still not 100% on how to do it. I understand that I may have to short pins but actually fitting it in the PCI 1x slot is confusing me. Can I just stick it in there if the card will fit? Do I need a powered riser? Unpowered? Can someone with some more experience explain what I NEED and what is just extra stuff.

I use these risers from eBay, very cheap and they do the job.
They fit in 16x and 1x slots.

The one thing you want to be careful of is the power you are using with your cards.  If you are undervolting or using a card that draws little power you will be right as rain.   If you have a factory overclocked and over volted card, you will want to be VERY VERY careful.  You may end up needing powered risers at that point!

I was gonna suggest this but was not for sure. Now I know myself.

Some guy just burnt up his asrock board, for not using powered risers.

Probably to stay safe, use powered risers anyhow for the sake of it?

Its really a matter of how much power are your cards eating.   I have my 7970s all undervolted except one and I'm really kinda getting nervous about it except for the fact it has dual 8 pin pci-e connections instead of the 8+6.    That one I'd actualy like to get on a powered riser.

wait.. so what happens if one uses overclocked cards on a standard non-powered riser?

I just built a new machine with 2x gigabyte 7950s (the new edition, has a 8pin and 6pin pci-e power with a 1.25v locked in)

I've searched and don't see anything except the specialized parts dells etc need / or 1U rackmounts need to get a gpu at all...

Yup, but also PCIe 1x to PCIe 16x if you want to use the PCIe 1x connectors.

Look at my picture somewhere up here, that model but then powered.

I had one of those, the soldering was so shit that it shorted out and killed a 5770 and a 5830 of mine!

Hack the redundant end off the the long end, take the blue tape off and check every connector with a magnifying glass. Thats what I do now.

Also, no need to short any wires and put power in afaik, mine work fine

I've only used unpowerered before.

What are the perils of using those - could that account for some of my "uptime" issues after adding another card (and on a riser) in - what I hoped was an easier to cool rig

What about over powering your PSU - i know you can use 2 psu.  But do you join the grounds of at least one of molex pins from each psu - or doesn't the variance in "true ground" bother things?

I tested all the risers on my old PentiumD with nVidia 6200 card before using them in a rig
