The irony is that most captcha's now provide problematic to people but not to sophisticated bots. There was a time when they were moderately useful at stopping spam but now I think it is really time to move on.

I mean, I (and I assume I am not the only one) have a good deal of trouble with many of them, yet bots still fly through them routinely.

This is true, bots are getting smarter and are able to get through captchas as if it is nothing while many times I need to perform the captchas over and over again because apparently I cannot get the answer right, so I think it is time to look for another protection against that but what could protect websites against bots?
