Okey...

let's say I'm trying to build rig with 6x RX480, ASRock BTC Pro Rev2 etc...

now for this I could use let say 1x 1300W PSU or 2x 700W PSU.

Now my question is what are the risks of running rigs with 2 PSUs? (not wiring and stuff, I'm asking about failure risks)

I mean what would happen if just one of PSUs would die while there are 6 GPUs on full load on that system?

Fried mobo? Fried GPUs?  Huh

As long as you don't use multiple PSUs to feed the same GPU, I don't think there is an issue.  There are some configurations which will cause big problems.

Yeah, afaik rx480 has only 1x 6 pin connector and Nitro version has 1x 8 pin connector, so that and power for PCI-E riser has to be on the same PSU and I'm good?

Now it makes sense, thx.

Just ground them together and you will be fine.

Also on the secondary PSU plug a fan into it just in case the main PSU shuts off so it doesn't run without a load.

Because you are asking this questions , my suggestion is : use only one psu
Yes you can kill your mobo , your raisers, and your psu , if you are not sure what you doing Smiley
Also probably you going to have some problem to set your rig stable with 6 cards setup.
I would go for a 1500-1600 watts psu with a 6 rx 480 setup , just in case if you want to fine tune the cards later for better mining performance Wink

Modern cards needs less power, so 2PSUs in one system are not need.
Just choose a high-power PCU.

I can advise to look at, say, EVGA PSUs.
And one another thing: i see that AMD RX load is floating, so better to choose single line PSU

What does the letter C, in PCU stands for?
Just curious.

there is no need to use dual psu anymore, one 1000w is fine for all the current gpu generation, they consume far less than old generation card

you need to keep in mind that from now gpu will consume less and less, so bulky psu are useless and expensive, and not needed anymore

just stick with 1000w psu

I have two PSUs 700W and 500W for my 6x RX480 Rig and they are plugged in 2 different UPS which are plugged in the same wall outlet.

The 500W is powering 2 cards + the 2 risers of those 2 cards and the system. The 700W is powering 4 cards and risers of the 4 cards.

I haven't had a problem at all.

You can find tons of 250-300w psus for free.
Each can run 2 pieces of 280x in my setup.

1000w psu should push 8 cards or more.

From what I've saw here, there's a few people using that kind of setup, and none reported any kind of failure to my hear until that day.

Only issue ever had is bad molex connectors.
If using those, cut and solder!

About the 280x, power usage dropped to 125-140w
Stock voltage will kill them.

There is two thing which you should do to make this work:
1) Connect ground wires of PSUs;
2) Use either usb or 'cut' ribbon risers.
Both are important.
This way risks of damaging mobo/gpus are not higher than with using one PSU.

I personally have rigs with 6 R9 390 cards which are powered from 3 750W PSUs.

Yeah I understand that, for PSUs I'd use

https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.frozencpu.com%2Fimages%2Fproducts%2Fmain%2Fcpa-167.jpg&t=571&c=9vDX5SVG3EIYBw

I guess Smiley

I mean I'm thinking about buying new PSUs and from what I saw I can get 2x 700W cheaper than single 1200W or 1400W (I don't think running shitty grade PSUs is a good idea) and even then the problem is the fact that except for mining 1000+W PSUs are useless (from perspective of keeping my options open).

Continuing on the same topic, i'm planning a 6xGTX 1080ti mining rig for Equihash and the problem is, i haven't been able to find a PSU that can output over 1600 watts and have 12x8 pin power connectors. Does such a PSU exist or not?

I guess the only choice is to go with 2 PSUs?  Undecided

For all the noobies. DONT EVER TRY MINING WITH A 250-350W GENERIC BRAND PSU. Even if you don't overload it, they are not meant for long term high wattage usage, you will not only fry the PSU you will most likely mess up your GPU.

These PSUs are generally only built for housewives who sit on Facebook all day. Not for Gaming, especially mining.
