right the saftest way to do all this is

1.open your current bitcoin client
2.go to "file" and "backup wallet"
3.save the backup to somewhere useful and easy to get at like "my documents"
4.close the Bitcoin Client
5. run installation for new bitcoin client

after all this you run the new client wait for it to rescan everything and then your sorted

step 2 and 3 back up all your wallet addresses just incase something does go wrong its easy to so sort out
id do step 2 and 3 a couple of times (better to be safe then sorry) but also keep the backups very very safe as someone could easily steal them if there not secure

find wallet , back it up a few different places (not just a usb stick! those are flakey)  then procede.

There's a Backup Wallet command in bitcoin qt
