Hi everybody

I have a big problem, I buy itcoins but it asks me to scan the private key. I quote "This address is in read-only mode. To spend the funds in this portfolio, please scan your private key.

Or find that private key? thank you

Where are you trying to buy bitcoins?

Sounds like a scam because you should never give away your private key, a BTC address should be enough for them to send BTC to you.

I already buy itcoins, but they are in the category "imported address", when I click on them they tell me that this address is in read only mode and that to spend the funds I have to scan my private key

Are you trying to access coins from a watch only wallet ? Please give information about the wallet or services you're using.Note that it is never safe to trust your private key with any third party services because they're most likely a scam.

I think its a red flag on me, since why would they ask a private keys in the first place? Private keys should be a secret and it is only you as possible must owned and store it.Giving your private keys to other person is just like giving keys to the burglars.

Yes, that makes sense because I just found out that is a mandatory step for imported addresses. How else would you import an address without a private key otherwise ?

Quote from their FAQ page :
Quote
Import / Export
Multiple Private Key Formats - Mini private keys, Wallet Import Format, Base58, Base64 and Hex.
Watch Only - Watch Only addresses allow you to view transactions at an address without storing the private key in your wallet.
Brain Wallet - Generate A private key from a passphrase.
Import From QR Code - Scan A private key using a webcam.
Import Wallet Files - Vanitygen, blockchain.info and multibit .key files supported.
Export Encrypted or Unencrypted.
JSON RPC Import - Import / Export using the bitcoind JSON RPC API
Paper Wallets
Sign Message - Sign a message to prove you own a bitcoin address.
Verify Message - Verify the owner of a bitcoin address.
Import Bitcoin-Qt Wallet - Import keys from a wallet.dat file.

Private key is like your password for your email address. you can give your email to others and they send you email but in order for you to send email you need password to log in.

so here when you imported your bitcoin address (starting with 1 or 3) into your wallet it only imported the "address" which is a public thing and you can only see the balance.

if you want to spend your coins, you need your private key.

also be careful what you are using, if it is a real wallet and you are sure about security of it (downloaded from right source,...) then import your private key and spend the coins otherwise first make sure and then do it.

You imported the address only into Blockchain.info. Transactions cannot be done without a valid signature using the private key that corresponds to the address you are sending the funds from. Where did you get the address from? Do you still have the private key? A private key should start with either 5, K or L.

You have the app yet you cannot do transactions using that app? What, have you imported a watch-only address? Upon downloading a wallet app, it comes with a private key already, even blockchain.info app has that. It might have been that you are using a wallet that is watch-only and cannot be used to spend coins, only receive coins and you cannot do anything to those coins being received, hence the term "watch-only".

Are there already coins in the address?

I buy bitcoin via bitboat, the worry is that I give to receive my bitcoins an old bitcoins address that I had noted on a note I did not know that changing it all the time.

I have never had a private key

Then you never bought bitcoin. An address does not generate itself[1]. Its derived from the private key. Where did you get the address from?

[1] yeah, there are exceptions like burn addresses

How you have generated that bitcoin address? I mean have you generated using some services like bitaddress.org and than you have imported that to blockchain.info wallet? If so than i think you have actually scanned bitcoin address while importing so it remain as watch only address, you should have scanned private key when importing before. Hope you have printed out bitcoin address detail.... If not i think your bitcoin will stuck in that address and you will not have access to it.
