Being a first time user of this forum doesn't mean I or anyone else are "imposters". As a new member of this forum doesn't mean I am a newbie or unexperienced. Soon being 72 years old and a professional in the computer business since -79, I feel offended by seeing this message injected into a PM to another member of this forum.

!!! WARNING: This user is a newbie. If you are expecting a message from a more veteran member, then this is an imposter !!!

I think it is offensive and quite rude to assume that new members are imposters. Forum admins could do better than this, and I suggest a better treatment of forum newcomers.

I feel it is very suitable. The forum has had a lot of scams where people have misused the same names as other people and have tried scamming. There is no reason for a newbie for anyways to go first during transactions or something, so if you are legit then you shouldn't have a problem with it. I am sure all forum members understand the fact that not all newbies are scammers, its just a way for the forum to warn us and let us know we might be dealing with an imposter.

Assuming your statement about profession and status is true, it can only applied in your case but how about others? With all your respect, do you think every newbie here has the same status as yours? You want the forum to adjust because of your own concern?

Deal with your feelings about that. There are lots of newly made accounts that has a purpose of doing shit to others. What if a "good" newbies encountered those sweet messages by a shit newbie? Chances of falling in a trap is possible.

Deal with it. Maybe you're one of the 10% of newbies who actually make it past this stage, because the other 90% go off scamming, or are bots. The warning is a security measure.

However after two weeks you'll be a junior member, and the warning automatically removed. Just be patient.

I remember back before this feature is implanted, there was a case where someone create a new account with a similar name to theymos (administrator and advertising auction manager) and PM one of the successful bidder an address to send his/her payment to. Without verifying the username of the sender, the bidder actually send about 1 BTC the the address.

Sometime later, this feature was implanted to "alert" people that PMs is actually send by a newbie. Hence, preventing similar type of scam.

* I am not sure if my story is correct but that is what I read on the auction topic. I can't seem to find the link to the auction. Someone who know this, kindly verify (and correct my story) and provide a link if possible.

So sad! This profile does not appear as the #1 result (on anonymous) Google searches anymore.

Time to be active on the crypto forums again? Proud to be one of the few Legendary members of the Sparkie Red Dot!

Wow, you've been in the computer business since 79 BC.  Can't imagine what OS they were using back then.

Derp. Derp. Derp.

It's all about you, so I'm sure Theymos will see your post here and no doubt he will soon be burning up his keyboard changing things.  Stick around, you might meet some really friendly people here.  And then there are the hordes of scammers who buzz around here like flies on a deer carcass.  That's the reason for the warning.  Don't take it personally.

Yes the victim here has a fault too and it was admitted. So to prevent future problems, at least, theymos implemented it.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1043941.0

OP should realized this now so better deal with the current implementation of that warning than to cry out loud because of own feeling.

This thread belongs to Meta.

As for the newbie's concern, that is the way it is around here and you should not feel offended. This forum has every right to protect all the users from getting scammed. I feel that a large percentage of users here are out there to scam the more clueless and gullible people participating in this forum.

Dont worry, after spending a couple of hours on the forum and making about 30 posts, you will not be a newbie anymore and warning will disappear.

Wow, you've been in the computer business since 79 BC.
80 BC, actually. When using +/- year numbering, remember that year 0 is actually 1 BC. The Catholic Church apologises for the inconvenience.

Can't imagine what OS they were using back then.
An old version of Maya OS, no doubt. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it; it's still widely used enough that the infamous year 2012 bug threatened to cause worldwide chaos, but they managed to rush an update through at the last minute.

Sir, I respect you as a fellow computer professional in the industry since '83.   You must understand that bitcoin payments are irreversible.

It's too easy to create a fake account and try to scam somebody.  I've had it happen to me personally.

Don't take the warning to heart - it will soon pass and you can thrive in this community without worrying about being scammed.

For example, I am a trusted member of the community.  People try to take advantage of that trust:

I think it is offensive and quite rude to assume that new members are imposters. Forum admins could do better than this, and I suggest a better treatment of forum newcomers.

It is the safest way to warn people that there may be dealing with a different person. As accounts can easily be made here in forum, it is easy to fake identities.
Here is an example from recently:
someone faking to be someone else.

The warning did helped.

I know it may be offending for some people specially if youhave no ill-will but for the safety of many, let's just don't take it too seriously.

Don't take this matter seriously because all of users on this forum are treated as equal.

Its a security measure that has been an overall net positive. For everyone one decent person out there, there are a handful of those who are not when they have a low likelyhood of being caught. People being scammed with usernames that have minor variations of an escrow agent they were expecting a pm from, or someone they started a deal with wasn't nearly as uncommon as the forum admins/staff would have liked, so the newbie message was implemented. It just says that if you were expecting a message from SaltySpitoon and you are getting one from SaitySpitoon (a newbie member) think twice before sending that payment.

It doesn't imply that newbies are less trustworthy, it just says that its easy to quickly make an account with a username similar to someone else's when you see a post in a thread that says, "I'll buy it, pm incoming"

The message does not take all newbies to be imposters.

It only warns the recipient of the message that the user on the other end is a newbie, and if the recipient was expecting a message from a high rank member, this is not him.

Just so that you won't end up paying back a loan from Xiodn4-9t5O3 to a newbie with username Xiodn4-9t503. Grin
