The question I have is what is the down side of a large miner pool acting as a block to seg witness and NOT allowing it to activate due
to not reaching the 95% threshold

The miner group in question has all the advantages of the previous NO seg witness method of 0.13.0.....

things just chug along as usual. Bitcoin core is 'stymied'.  That group wins in that some compromise has to be given by bitcoin core or Seg witness threshold of 95% is never reached or no seg witness thus no lightning thus no solution

stalemate Sad

Thus your group of miners or all big china, miners in general, retain the power with this veto..they get the block size increase and things go along as usual

win/win/win

So what am I missing...besides the obvious pissing off bitcoin core and a nuclear 'fork' of bitcoin ..which I don't think they would do...bitcoin core that is...

just seems like stalemate imho as seg witness is set up for 95%

do the poll you can see where I'm gonna vote on this

Actually it would be a Upside if SegWit is Blocked.
Anyone that takes a close look at Lightening network will see it is too complex for most of the people.
People in the forum can't even agree on how it works.  Tongue

Best news is segwit & LN are blocked and this forces the core devs to just release an increased blocksize only without all of the other shenanigans included with segwit.

Classic Support (1.6%)    Unlimited Support (9%)    8MB Support (10%)    SegWit Support (25%)

I'm pretty sure that SegWit will prevail, reaching more than 95% support. Choosing such a high threshold isn't guaranteeing an easy upgrade for sure, but it shows the responsibility of Cor developers, who don't want to risk a controversial fork. This stands in stark contrast to the Classic/UnlimitedCoin gang, which set a much lower threshold and propose a full hardfork. On the other hand, SegWit could still get activated with less than 95%  support if a majority of miners just starts mining SegWit blocks...

The Chinese mining pools represent the main uncertainty factor regarding SegWit activation for sure. Even if some of them are in favor of larger blocks it doesn't mean that they are against SegWit, which is also a significant security improvement.

I doubt that Roger Ver will succeed in bribing pools to maintain blockade of SegWit. Because the vast majority of users is supporting SegWit, pools have a lot to loose if they follow the path of Bitcoin Judas.

im laughing at you blaming a possible segwit veto on BU

you do realise that even without BU's ~9%.. there are pools with HIGHER % that are not confident about segwit. for reasons UNRELATED to BU.
trying to put all the blame on BU is like blaming your dog for having a messy house of 20 people(pools)

the reality is while everyone is pointing at the dog atleast 5-15(pools) people are creating the mess you are worried about.

wake up have a reality check and get some prospective

I'm afraid UnlimitedCoin is not even a dog. It's a dead cat connected to a rotten car battery, controlled by Roger Ver.

There is no worry on my behalf. There is great confidence that SegWit will activate much sooner than the naysayers think, because it constitutes true technological advancement. Almost all pool operators acknowledge that. Chinese pools will chime in for SegWit, once they've made sure that their importance has been acknowledged.

Note that signaling for bigger blocks and endorsing SegWit is not mutually exclusive.
