The map has been broken for months.  It does not load without clicking "load insecure content".

I found the flaw and can fix it easily.

But I don't have the edit privileges!

Look at www.coinmap.org
It's a map of places that accept bitcoin.

I realize that bitcoin.travel, bitcoinmap.com, and coinmap.com all have nice maps, but it is important to have the wiki working since many articles link to it, and it ranks highly on google searches.  The wiki also lists some shops that are not on the other maps.  I know the flaw is easy to fix, but I have no idea who to contact.

An administrator will have to fix this issue. It appears that the map is trying to pull some content via HTTP, since the wiki is only available via HTTPS the content is blocked by most browsers.

Here is the relevant error from Chrome:

Quote

Someone with access to the PHP code for this plugin will need to change any mentions of http://maps.google.com to https://maps.google.com for the map to work.

Edit: I have mentioned the issue in #bitcoin-dev on Freenode, we'll see if anyone runs with it.

I have dived a little deeper into the problem (I tried to reply earlier, but was stuck in the newbie limbo Smiley). As I'm not an administrator of the MediaWiki installation I can not edit the php files myself, but I believe only one edit in one file of the 'Maps' extension is all that is needed.

In the file <mediawiki extensions installationmap>\mediawiki-extensions-Maps-<version number>\includes\services\GoogleMaps3\Maps_GoogleMaps3.php
the line at row 253 should be changed from
Code:
return Html::linkedScript( 'http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?' . wfArrayToCgi( $urlArgs ) );
to
Code:
return Html::linkedScript( 'https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?' . wfArrayToCgi( $urlArgs ) );

I have also removed a blank line between the <display_points> tag, that was causing the error message '* Parameter coordinates must be one or more valid locations.The value "" has been omitted.' (see the edit https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Real_world_shops&diff=37688&oldid=35843|here).

I e-mailed the above solution (at least I hope Wink) to Mark, the administrator of the Bitcoin Wiki.

Let's hope it will be up and running soon.

Will the admin be at the conference?  Can we talk to him about this and move it along?

I don't know if he'll be at the conference. And sadly I'm not able to be there either.

I tried contacting him on the IRC channel of the wiki, and pointed him to this topic, but he was not active/responding. Let's hope he sees my messages and picks up on it.

I have an account on the wiki there, I just have not paid the 0.01btc to be able to edit the pages.  I believe they implemented that to prevent spam.  Once I get my MultiBit wallet back in working order I should be able to help you out with this, because then I can make the deposit to the wiki.

Save yourself the trouble/expense. I have edit privileges, but the problem is in the Maps extension of the wiki. It is not something you can resolve by editing the wiki article. To resolve the problem, you will need to edit php files on the webserver.

This is the underlying problem; I have tried to contact the administrator of the wiki. I tried IRC chat (personal messages), e-mail (on the contact page of the wiki) and a private message on this forum. I can see his account on this forum is still active, but he just doesn't reply to my messages. Since he is the only administrator of the wiki, the problem can not be resolved.

In this topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=160876.0 they are looking for extra admins for the wiki, but I don't know if the current admin is involved in that process.

I plan on adding some information to the article about other sites which offer ways to find bitcoin accepting businesses, so people will know where to look.

I have added the 'Other real world shop maps' to the wiki article. The new section lists websites that display real world shops on a map. So when people don't see the map because the browser blocks it, at least they have a few good alternatives.

This is absolutely ridiculous that we can't get this fixed.  Mark needs to give access to someone like Stephen Gornick immediately.

Is it possible to delete the whole map so it just lists the other map sites?

It is possible, but I don't think it is a good idea.

According to the edit history of the article people are still actively mainting the listings on the map. If I were to remove the map, I will remove all the work people are still putting in.
