Reference OEM 7970, 13.3 beta, SDK that came with it. CGMiner 2.11.4, Diablo kernel, Worksize 256, Default vectors (1), intensity 11, 2 GPU Threads. Don't need to specify any other options aside from pool and GPU speeds. 1185 Core, 300 memory.

713.2 MHash/sec

Running with 1 GPU thread was about 700 on the nose. Also, I have not experimented with all the combinations quite yet.

I have XFX cards from the 6 series and the Double Ds are nice.  The 7 series XFX really skimped out on parts and quality control.  Everybody agrees they're thermal nightmares.

Catalyst 13.3 Beta 3
OpenCL: 10.0.1124.2

7970
1000/300 (1.050v) ~ 601 MH/s
Max temp: 37°C

1010/300 (0.987v) ~ 608 MH/s
Max temp: 37°C

1050/300 (1.010v) ~ 635 MH/s
Max temp: 38°C

7950
1100/300 (1.024v) ~ 577 MH/s
Max temp: 38°C

How fast are you running your fans to keep the temp that low? What is the ambient temp?

Hi guys, I am new to mining and just trying to catch up with all those technicalities so forgive me if I am talking nonsense Smiley

I put my AMD Radeon HD 7970 into just normal DELL Win 7 64 bit and I am using GUIMiner wtih -v -w 128 flags

My worry is that my card is running too high temperatures with fen working at about 100%. I underclocked it even but still the temps worry me. In Catalist I see

Activity: 98%
GPU clock: 895 MHz
mem clock: 1240 MHz
Power: 0%
Temp: 76 C
Fan Speed: 98 %

When I set to default (not using any tuning) my card hits t0 80+ C so I underclocked. But again, I don't know how to properly tune all those parameters, so any pointers would be awesome.

Thanks!

Ambient: 67-71°F

I don't use the stock cooling. Instead, I water cool most of my cards.  My 7970's have EK-FC7970 blocks and my 7950's have Thermaltake and Corsair AIO liquid cooled units modded to them.

For BTC, right? BTC mining does not use hardly any RAM, so feel free to underclock the RAM as far as it will let you, which is 150MHz below your core clock. This will save you a few deg.

Anything in the 80Cs is OK for mining for 1 year.  After 3 years at 80C it may be a problem.  Try undervolting it or clocking the memory down, that should help temps a lot.   I try to keep the fan under 65% if possible.

Have an update. Figured I'd bump.

Reference OEM 7970, 13.3 beta, SDK that came with it. CGMiner 2.11.4, Diablo kernel, Worksize 256, Default vectors (1), intensity 11, 2 GPU Threads (default). Don't need to specify any other options aside from pool and GPU speeds. 1185 Core, 300 memory.

713.2 MHash/sec, or ~0.60186 MHash/MHz.

Running with 1 GPU thread was about 700 on the nose. Also, I have not experimented with all the combinations quite yet.

Edit: On another 7970, I was able to get slightly different core clocks, namely 1220/300, and I tested other kernel combinations and let them hash out for about 4-8 hours to get a good average that wouldn't fluctuate. Increasing vectors decreased hashrate significantly. Increasing threads beyond 2 either decreased hashrate significantly or caused a driver crash and recover. The default GPU threads (2) and default vectors (1) seem to be optimal.

730.1 MHash/sec (0.59844 MHash/MHz) with poclbm kernel and worksize=256
731.3 MHash/sec (0.59943 MHash/MHz) with poclbm kernel and worksize=128
728.1 MHash/sec (0.59680 MHash/MHz) with poclbm kernel and worksize=64 (This is the default setting.)
730.8 MHash/sec (0.59902 MHash/MHz) with diablo kernel and worksize=256
731.7 MHash/sec (0.59975 MHash/MHz) with diablo kernel and worksize=128
726.6 MHash/sec (0.59557 MHash/MHz) with diablo kernel and worksize=64

The hashrate per MHz seems to be slightly lower, probably because of a lower RAM:Core ratio. I will increase it slightly to see if I can eek out a slightly better MHash/MHz.

great update, thanks for your info..

May I ask if you've done anything with your voltage? Or just left it be?

I left it alone, and getting about the same (5-10 variance) with just clocking the engine to 1200 and using diablo core and worksize 128, running at 75% fan at 74 degrees. (fan is variable from 50-95) Note this is a single card setup, if you run dual cards... you'll see almost 10 degrees higher on your top card depending on your cooling.

never messed with overclocking or under clocking much, never had the need

if i post my current info can someone help me improve on the hash rate while lowering temps?

win 7 64
gui miner
catalyst 13.1

gpu is xfx 7970 black double d.
current settings
core 925
memory 1325
vddc 1.175
temp 73deg c
hashrate 536mhash/s
fans speed 62%
load 98%
any help would be appreciated
