Is it true that though having more computational power will only increase the odds of winning, but if someone is lucky, they can solve and get bitcoins with merely a CPU/GPU desktop?

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

It would take an increasingly astronomical amount of luck. And that's an understatement.

They can, but you will need to be incredibly lucky, like unfathomably lucky. Would be interesting to see what the actual numbers are. Rather save the electricity from running your macbook's CPU/GPU and buy lottery tickets. Wink

As I see it is very rare when an individual IP solves a block, but there is a little chance, try it if you like.
