Moving bitcoin core wallet to new HDD

Google-fu is failing me. I have two hard drives on my computer. Can I just copy and paste my wallet from one hard drive to another to move it and keep the same private key/wallet integrity? Does it generate a brand new wallet when it is moved?

If I understand you correctly, you want to move the entire wallet and blockchain files to another HDD on the same computer?

Always make a backup of the wallet.dat first.

If yes, just go to %appdata%/Bitcoin* and move the whole folder over to your other HDD. Next, you need to specify the new data directory of Bitcoin Core. Just start Bitcoin Core and it will ask if you want to specify the new data directory (Use the custom data directory). Navigate to where you copied the folder to.

*Or whatever directory you chose.

Well, problem was solved anyway. I realized I'd just had the wallet on my primary hdd as a shortcut. The bulk of it was on the extra drive that's now going into cold storage.

Your wallet by default retrieves wallet and blockchain info from your roaming file. You can configure this in settings.

If youre using it for cold storage spending, then you don't need the blockchain. Just copy the Bitcoin data file without the blockchain folder into your HDD and change the path in your Bitcoin client settings, and youre good to go.

For cold storage so you can plug it into your computer in the future and resync it from where you left it, you can keep the blockchain but you'll need sufficient storage. Honestly by the time you plug it back in youll have multiple gigabit web transfers as a standard, so it won't matter

So I replied to this thread earlier with a confirmation that the bitcoin core client will prompt you for the location of the datadir if you move it elsewhere, like another folder/dir partition or disk.  It was deleted a few hours later.  I realize that this thread is like a year old, but there are new people everyday venturing into the crypto world and this information in my opinion is still relevant (as researching this question brought me to this forum thread).  the current core 15.0 client supports this feature and looks to have in previous others.  Usually 3 confirmations of an answer is sufficient to trust the information for action.  I did not see three confirmations.
