Select the avatar you want to upload. It must be no more than 120px wide, 80px tall, and 100 KiB in size. It must be a PNG, GIF, or JPEG image. It must be safe for work. To remove your avatar, submit this form without choosing any file to upload.

Animated GIF images are not allowed.

^ I get it when I try to upload a GIF I made. It clearly says that GIF format is allowed though?

Would be nice if we could either add GIFs or at least have a message that "animated" ones aren't supported?

Thanks!

EDIT: I'm talking about the avatar GIF

animated gif aren't supported anymore as stated by lutpin in this thread; https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1400262.0

Because AFAIK animated gifs aren't supported/allowed anymore. Those you see around have uploaded their animated avatar ages ago.
Static gifs however aren't a problem at all, as my avatar shows.

A quick forum search revealed the following:

Old account (i.e ~2-3 years old ) were allowed [animated] gif avatars. But now it is not allowed not any member rank but still some old accounts have their [animated] gif avatar as their account avatar and is pretty in demand as now it is not allowed and user find [animated] gif avatars more attractive so it does make sense. If you try to put up an [animated] gif avatar it will refuse up and ask you to put up a .png or .jpeg or any non-animated [gif] avatar.
however:

Well, first of all, a gif is only an image/file format, so not all gifs have to be animated (/moving).
There are static (not moving/animated) gifs, aswell as animated ones.
Since the latter are not supported anymore for new avatars, I ofc couldn't upload an animated one,
however, my avatar is a gif, as you can see here:

;p

All I wanted is show this lack of information, that animated ones aren't allowed. It's not a big deal honestly.

Depends on the GIF actually.Honestly I have never bothered figuring out how it works but here is a working one.Usually we embed the gif ending with a ".gif" extension inside the image tag, works fine for me.Although there are a few gifs which didn't fit well (maybe against the forum's rules) but most of the time the one's ending with .gif should work.

Hey, hey. I mean the avatar GIFs. Apologies if you got confused. I've edited OP with that bit of information.

OP is talking about avatars, not gifs as part of your posts.

You try it once, get the message, that's it.
Reasons and history have been quoted (funny, that's my post Cheesy ) above.

Why aren't they allowed tho? I can't think of any problem for people using them, bacause I'd like to use one myself.

Need some spare btc for a new PC that can at least run Adobe Dreamweaver.

Animated gif use for your avatar is a known attack vector for forum types such as what bitcointalk.org uses.
They have been disabled since October 2013, I assume because there is no known fix for this exploit.

This user registered on July 15, 2016 and he has an animated gif avatar.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=878718

On his profile page you can see it's a car with its headlights flashing on and off, and if you read any of his posts inside a thread it's animated.

How did the system let him upload it in 2016?

How did the system let him upload it in 2016?
And now so do I (at the point of posting this, not going to keep it for long -> http://archive.is/1ru4E#85%).
My first guess would have been that it's got to do with avatars already being in the database,
but upon trying 24792, 56341, 97199 and 84524, none of them worked.
All of those however were animations with more than 2 stages, unlike the one in my avatar right now.
