But was there a need to cancel the Contest ?

I don't think forum allows you to Cancel something before finishing it or locking down a topic which has partial information.
So you did a bad thing for the users who made the bet for this Contest.
And closing down of this contest signifies that you didn't wanted to credit the giveaway to the right person.
