Even if you use Bitcoin through Tor, the way transactions are handled by the network makes anonymity difficult to achieve. Do not expect your transactions to be anonymous unless you really know what you're doing.

Don't do business with merchants you don't trust.

Check to see if anyone else is reporting issues with a business you are considering transacting with, and what sort of issues they are.

Publicly call out any merchant that does poor business so everyone else knows to avoid them.

Consider insisting on an escrow service run by a mutually trusted third party if you have reservations about doing business with a particular merchant.

With paypal and credit cards, the consumer is protected from merchant fraud.

With bitcoins merchants are protected from consumer fraud.

If big or risky use an escrow service..

I have yet to test many.   I am looking into the electronic store for a small camera purchase. I have only bought a few bits for fun.  Also found out AtmosWholesale a local California seller is Bit Friendly now accepting Bits!  Besides that recently offered my buddy .5 bits for help with graphics and programming on a blog site im working on.  I started educating friends and family in April, mentioned again in march now i am watching the changes and looking to barter for bits.  Not enough to spend yet but after some more increase Im investing in a gift to myself. I want to start bartering more for bits and can offer:

BTC Basic Consulting
BTC Support
Hosting Services
Printing Services
Design Services
or some used cars! Smiley  Local California Bit Friendly folks message me!

Actually, until better services are created for bitcoin and less merchants are willing to accept paypal, you're probably right.

But that wasn't your question.  Your question was how you can make safe purchases with bitcoin.

You've been given plenty of advice in that regard.  Use that advice however you like.
