Relying on basic income is a trap that far too many people will fall into.

In many countries there is no basic income or it is only given to families with children. How much is the basic income in Finland ATM? A quick search gave me an article saying that it's about $600. If this is correct it means you're getting more money for staying at home and banging your women than people South of you get on their monthly paychecks!

This basic income will be paid every month to unemployed people who are currently on welfare benefits. It will be a test project and will only be available for a randomly chosen group: Finland is about to launch an experiment in which a randomly selected group of 2,000–3,000 citizens already on unemployment benefits will begin to receive a monthly basic income of 560 euros (approx. $600). That basic income will replace their existing benefits. The amount is the same as the current guaranteed minimum level of Finnish social security support. The pilot study, running for two years in 2017-2018, aims to assess whether basic income can help reduce poverty, social exclusion, and bureaucracy, while increasing the employment rate. I think it will have a positive effect on the employment rate But perhaps the Finnish government will have to raise the taxes in order to collect more money to give away to jobless people.

I dont know whats the reason behind those deductions but i doubt they have a plan regarding on your country and some members said here that they are planning to increase employment rate.

The basic income in Finland is if I understood correctly, about 500 dollars which is not bad considering in other european countries the minimum wage is less than that basic income... but I guess the cost of living in finland is higher than in said countries so at the end of the day is the same, you are fucked if you dont have a good paying job or business.

I don't think is a good idea to cut in services that people really need, if you cut the basic income of that amount in Finland. The people who receive the basic income from that service will get even deeper in the hole The government should not cut in the essential services, on the contrary, they should provide more in order to help the people who really need it.

Where I live most people barely make $12 per day. Btw if your income is low you can leave the Capital City Helsinki and move to a place where the life is cheaper.

What is the cost of living in Finland and how does it compare to cost of living in other West European countries? Is it possible to rent a flat and pay for basic utilities with that amount of basic income? Seems to be fairly low if the cost of living is similar to that of my country (Belgium).

How much was before? Is it only for one person or for the whole family! It really depends on he life expenses in the Finland but for some countries $215 is not bad if is only for a single person because of the cost living is less than in Finland. Finland is a Scandinavian country so the living costs should be more expensive.

Relying on basic income is a trap that far too many people will fall into.
It's a trap that governments want their people to fall into. Any government in power that sets up and makes a basic income system that a ton of people begin to rely on will for sure be voted in repeatedly, or they will at least make sure a political party considering getting rid of it never gets in. It's like Democrats and welfare promises - campaign on social issues and get people living on welfare so that anyone wanting to minimize it (Republicans) essentially lose a huge chunk of a voter base.

Per day? Wake up, and do the math, it would add up to $6,5k a month Nobody would be working in Finland if the wellfare was that high. What is the cost of living in Finland and how does it compare to cost of living in other West European countries? The average wage is ~€3000, which is just a bit more than that in USD, but that is a net wage, so if we subtract the taxes they should be left with more than $2000 a month. Typical for a developed country if you ask me. Are you getting money for doing nothing in Belgium? IMO $500, which is what they're getting right now for doing nothing, is a lot.

Correct! They'd get about $600 for staying at home and not do anything while those who work, like a salesperson, earns $1500 a month. Guess where those basic income are coming from? IMO, you should be thankful you're getting $600 without doing anything, and instead of being angry and dissatisfied, how about you find work and start earning that money for yourself.? My government doesn't give basic income, yet we don't have citizens complaining that the government has to support them and give them money every month. Everyone understands that is for the senior citizens, people with disability and retired citizens who have worked 40 - 50 years for the country! And, $600? That's double the minimum wage in my country. Plenty work 12 hrs a day, 7 days a week and not get that amount. We aren't entitled to anything and should work for ourselves.

I'm not from Europe and am not familiar with "basic income". Is that like public assistance, welfare, etc.? As in money the government gives to you if you're unemployed?
Those sentiments about your government are shared throughout the world--very few people are happy with their leaders. At least you don't have D. Trump as president. Consider yourself very lucky over there in Finland.

It's like getting welfare if you are living below the poverty line. But in order to distribute this basic income to unemployed people the government have to raise taxes for everyone else who is employed and they will be paying higher taxes to support the unemployed . I think the OP is disgruntled with how everything is getting more expensive in Finland due to this social security program.

You are very lucky with your situation right now. If you want you can transfer to our place in the Philippines. We are earning only 20$ a month and tha is below the minimum wage. Though I am working in the government I am not a regular employee and there are no benefits. If I stayed at home the government will not give me money for anything. NO work no pay. You are lucky finland government gives provisions to jobless individuals.
Come at my place and if you dont work, you will not earn, and you will die waiting for nothing. So be thankful of your governments effort, you are a lucky citizen.

Real talk here since im living on the same country as yours on which basic income is very low and the standard of living is somehow low compared to others thats why it depends on the economic state and they are basing on it thats why we have low salaries. In case of OP that basic salary for him is already not enough for him because the standard of living there is different and also telling him to transfer on our country is not easy., He will suffer for sure. hehe

To be honest, as much as I love Finland, it's probably for the best that they're deciding to reduce some of the basic income they're giving out. It'll help more people go and get jobs and contribute more (presumably), so it might contribute towards the economic health of the nation. I'm surprised so much is happening in Finland that appears to be negative, but I don't know enough about the country's government to have a good opinion.
