Hello I recently got my dad interested in Bitcoin and he has been extremely frustrated by bitinstant and mtgox. Bitinstant has limits too low for his taste. I am taking bids and would appreciate suggestions on how to get him 5000 worth of bitcoin in a fast and expedient manner. The bids should be in percent over spot value.
EDIT: My location is Auburn AL my father's is Minneapolis MN.

In addition to bids here, you might also want to consider BitFloor.com, localbitcoins.com, and BitcoinsDirectAlthough it is my understanding that due to short supply BitcoinsDirect is not open to new customers at the moment. Where are you located. If you are within a reasonable drive of Chicago, I might be willing to meet up to assist as well. EDIT: As of 2013-04-17 BitFloor has ceased all operations.

Note that Bitcoin markets are currently unlike regular markets. Prices are increasing more than exponentially. You could spend a day figuring out how to get a fair price while that fair price increases 50 percent. I bought my coins for myself and my father a week ago at bitonic.nl, who are now sold out all of the time. I would go for any coins you can grab at the mentioned exchanges, and seriously consider the offers done above.

Depending on location and date of exchange, I'd be somewhere between 1% and 10% over mtGox spot for a cash exchange in person. Heck, I might even be willing to fly out to your location if the transaction fee covered the cost of the airline ticket and hotel. It'd be fun to take a trip.

Unless they are local and willing to meet exactly on my timetable, your fee is likely to be cheaper. My attempt to outbid you is entirely based on 2 possibilities: One: The buyer would feel more comfortable with an in person cash transaction. (Note: I would have no concerns about accepting EPiSKiNG's offer of bank deposit) Two: The buyer is local, (or at least somewhere that I can travel to pretty cheaply). EDIT: Heck, if they want an in person meet in their city and they are willing to accept a fee greater than 6%, I might even end up attempting to purchase bitcoins from EPiSKiNG to cover the transaction so I don't draw down my own holdings too much.

Looks like the cheapest round trip airfare I can find to Minneapolis from Chicago this weekend would be $445. Even if I only did a 1% fee on top of that, you'd be looking at a total of $495 in fees (total 9.9%) for a $5,000 transaction. Sounds like EPiSKiNG is the better option unless meeting face-to-face for a cash exchange is really important. Note: If he's willing to make the drive (or flight), I'd be willing to meet up in Rockford, IL anytime Thursday evening, Friday, or Sunday and do the exchange there for 4% over mtGox spot.

Bitcoins Direct is accepting new clients on Tuesday. It requires the use of PGP and all funding is by bank wire, but it is a low cost, secure method to get coins same day. Standard fee is 1.29% of wired amount. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=87094

I've used them in the past, and if you are capable of working with PGP, they are a great source for bulk bitcoins. However, you may find that the delay of a few days until they open to new customers costs you more than the fees that EPiSKiNG and I are quoting you.

If you don't need the coins instantly put an order in on CampBX and you could probably get them for under Mt. Gox price. I've had good luck with them but with smaller amounts. Volume is lower there so it would take longer to fill your order.

Wise words. I made the same mistake to some degree. Missed out on a lot of potential profit :@
