I don't have to pay for electric, so I was thinking about getting into mining. I have about 2k USD to spend on equipment. But I could make it 3-4k but definitely not anymore than that. I would like the most compact miner too if possible. So I was thinking mining alt coins with graphics cards would be the best option. And I have 100% no idea what I am doing

In your free time start reading threads and gain knowledge on how it all works, that is the best advice.  Never go into this trade unprepared and better make damn sure you are  great at trouble shooting computers and have some electrical knowledge.  Also a ebay account that has positive feedback for reselling gpus.

Aside from that mining is not very profitable expect to earn slightly over $1 per gpu, RX 480 is very popular.   You could possibly deploy 2 6 card rigs and get a roi in about 1 year IF things hold up.

was in the same boat 4-5 years ago

was not a lot of info about then and was  hard on the cards, have learned so much more than mining tho! it can be time consuming and as long as your mining room can stay cool and u want to give it a go i say go for it

who knows what other coins will become available for GPU mining and how profitable it will be

i had mine off due to no free leccy for a couple of years but now free leccy again means i can earn some new coins and from a few grand of equipment, happy to say making over $20 a day from a load of HD7990's, 290x and 280x's

if anything goes wrong hardware wise be sure to get a supplier with good RMA record as i have had PSUs and GPUs replaced more than a few times! (sometimes my user error too!)

have fun and wish u much success

with that budget you can build 2 rig, you can choose between 1060, 470 or 480 for the cheaper gpu, they perform all the same with the last optimized miner

you should choose rx 470's,they are very close to rx 480's and more budget friendly.
if you want to have nvidia gpus, then go for gtx 1050 ti or 1060.

You can make 2 Rigs from this budget you have and I must say if you have free electricity free means absolutely free like i have then you shouldn't have any problem to dig in but yes before starting get some knowledge about mining some computer troubleshooting and some electrical knowledge aswell.
I was also on same boat 5 to 6 months ago.and how i have 6 Rigs with different cards the latest one i made is Sapphire Rx 480 nitro 8gb oc.
if you have free electricity you should go for big cards lol like HD 7990 R9 295x2 if not then should atleast go for sapphire r9 290 trix r9 390x

Wish you a Goodluck  Smiley

You do realize that a 7990 or 295x2 is very expensive. A 470 4gb would be cheaper in that case.

Either way, you've been a member of this forum for a while. You should of started mining about 10 months ago, you are really late.
