First you should be clear of what are you going to mine if you are going to mine Bitcoin then it is totally waste as the difficulty level is high and the reward per block is low, if you want to mine other altcoins then you should work on how much the electricity cost is their apart from their the maintenance expenses and more some expenses this all you have to calculate and then if go for mining it will be good , if not you will end up in loss of your investment

Fail to plan, and you plan to fail.

Like Watershin said, you need to be clear on what you are going to be mining, different hardware is more suited to different coins.
AMD Cards do better in some coins, NVIDIA cards are better in others, some coins do not care about CPU speed, some like Zcash do etc.

Currently the most profitable is ETH and on some days Zcash which both run well on similar hardware.
For $1000 you can setup a 5 GPU rig. Buy the GPU Shack 5 GPU bundle for $149, get 5 EX 470's for$160 each, and a 750W Gold PSU.
Fashion a frame out of scrap, install Windows 10 on the GPU Shack SSD, underclock and undervolt the cards to run them stable on the 750W PSU.
Several posts here in the forums detailing how you can do that.

i think its really hard to start mining before we know what we want to do first, i think you need to read other info before you buying some hardware.

i can give info about the hardware but i don't know about the price, the hardware you can use is RX470 + Intel i5 with RAM at least 4 GB, you can buy a new PC with support 4-6 vga cards. after that you should know about the coin info which you can found in coinmarketcap.com and for the place for mining, you can try in suprnova.cc because i see in that site support many altcoins.

or you can read on http://ethereum.stackexchange.com/questions/2719/whats-the-best-hardware-for-mining-ether, https://www.cryptocompare.com/mining/guides/how-to-choose-a-gpu-to-mine-ether-with/ and the other, just do google and you can found tons of a good info.

there should be a sticky about this, the build is always the same, my perfect choice is

asrock h81 pro btc
g1840
g.skill sniper 8GB
sandisk 60/120GB
RM1000i
6xrisers

then you add your number of gpu, with $1000 you can buy 3 x 470 or 3 x 1060, or 1.5 x 1070 which is not feasible...

I don't agree completely with you. MB and CPU is fine but why 8 gb of ram and why ssd for mining ? RAM and SSd are not needed ! You can buy used parts, 4gb of RAM used for about 10$ and find some used 60gb HDD for 10-15$. That is what I did and works like a charm. About PSU depends on card you will be using.

no 4gb are not enough, you need 8gb nowadays, of course you can buy everything used not just ram and ssd..., that's not the point, i like to buy new things when it come to HW stuff, a ssd cost only $40 new, saving 20 will not make any difference

on the psu, 1000 watt works perfectly with the current gen card, you wll never need more than that

Why is 4 gb not enough ? I have 3 rigs and every single one have 4gb of ram and they are working perfectly. Ram does not increase any performance and you can run 64bit systems on 4gb

I have added an extra 4gig ram for a total of 8 on some of my rigs. Dont know why but it did increase the hashrate.

some algo require a huge amount of system ram and then you need huge page file if you have low system memory, ram as very cheap no need tos ave on tht, yu can have 8 gb for less than $40, difference between that and 4Gb is like $15?

if you can spend the extra 20-30 bucks for a ssd, do it. the time you will save when messing with the OS/drivers/miners/reboot/whatever will be well worth it.

i swapped a hdd in for the ssd in my main rig and a week later put the ssd back in.

60/120 gb m2 sata ssd and youll not have to mess with power/data cables either, 2 less cables to worry about.
