I'm fairly good at PHP and web development. I want to create a few things for the benefit of the community. What is something that we are all in need of?

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

Competing wallet services (an easy to host version of bitcoin-js would be nice), and a way for them to interface, so if you want to try your hand at an e-wallet standard protocol, I think that'd be a huge help.

More online merchants would accept Bitcoin on their web sites if you developed a shopping cart interface that automatically and instantly sold any Bitcoins received for the local fiat currency on one of the exchanges.

probably something LYME-based become way more interesting, thanks to [seriously]lesser overhead under MASSIVE load.
same about pools/miners.
switching to MP-based engineering/coding paradigm[not especially with moving to Erlang, but thats help alot], will boost efficiency TREMENDOUSLY.

I like this idea. In addition, I would like to see USD converted to current BTC rate in real time. So, merchants won't have to continually adjust their prices.

+1

It would be HUGE if we can get bitcoins accepted in all major shopping-cart tools without requiring any additional efforts from the vendors. He would just receive dollars and not worry about understanding how bitcoins work.

Bitcoin acceptance would grow instantly (and after some time vendors would start keeping bitcoins instead of activating the automatic dollar conversion)

service like paypal and alipay.com

The bitcoin is very like cash, but when we do online business, we need the fund transfer very fast, I mean, done the transfer within 1 second. And paste the address every time is inconvenient, and keep the wallet.dat on the local computer just like you keep $1000,000 cash in your bedroom, which makes most of the people feel unsafe.

and for the merchants doing business with bitcoin, it's very fine to the super small one, as they only make one or two deal per day or even per week. but for those not so small merchants, like doing business tens of times per day, we need a more sophisticated payment service to overcome some problems.

If the bitcoin community have a wide accepted and really trustworthy service like paypal, the currency will be adopted by very large group.

one suggestion: go out and find some angle investment or venture capital, find some genius program and product manager you've got know in your life, and make it a serious enterprise!
