Looked for the namecoin GUI, file isn't available for download - has it moved or is it defunct ?

This is the only Namecoin GUI program that I know of: http://sourceforge.net/projects/namecoinj/files/NamecoinJ-1.5/

Never used it myself, personally.

Everything you need to do with Namecoin can be completed using the compiled files available at http://dot-bit.org
