So, about a year and a half ago I built a mining/gaming rig.  It had a badass mastercooler case, a >$300 ASUS motherboard, i7 2600k, 16 gb corsair ram, 1200 thermaltake psu, etc., and also 3 6970s.  My line of thinking at the time was something like, "Well, if Bitcoin goes to zero, people will still want to buy a gaming rig." 

And, of course, I purchased the 4-year in-store warranty.  I had to...you know...just in case my cards fried themselves out.

Well, after 15 months of running at >90C temps and 100% fan, my cards were finally starting to get a bit unstable at stock settings, so I took them back to the store under warranty.

TL;DR:  Now I have a nice 3x7970 upgrade at no cost.  Can't wait to do it again in 15 months Wink

Eh not exactly the kind of thing I would be boasting about.

It's good they honored their warranty.  Having bought extended warranties 2x at Staples I know to never trust those lying asshats every again.  I just would have answered honestly about the overclock.

90C+ at 100 fan?   WTH you got the cards humping each other?

90C+ at 100 fan?   WTH you got the cards humping each other?

Yes, they're practically humping each other, although placing some clothespins between the cards to space them out reduced heat by about 4C on the hottest card (I should mention the air circulation in my basement is terrible).  I figured that running them 24/7 was the best way to deal with hot cards.

As far as the boasting, Tiger Direct can suck it since their employees tend to know nothing about anything (I basically had to explain their own warranty policy to them).  And truly, the post was meant to be informative under the guise of being boastful.  I figured this would be something miners may want to consider.

Well if they don't specifically exclude overclocking and state normal usage (I think overclocking can be considered normal usage since most of the manufacturers boast about overclocking) then it's their fault.  Basically you paid for accidental damage and you "accidentally" damaged it.

A classmate of mine used to kill his Sony PDA device (back in early 2000s) by dropping water in it and getting Best Buy to refund him after he used it for a year.  I wanted to smack his so bad.  I hate Best Buy as a store but don't condone blatant fraud against them.  Stupid asshats ripped off Costco's accommodating policy and now look what happened to that.

As far as I know the extended warranties only go for one replacement though? You'd have to purchase another set for the new replaced card at least... right?

My mom had phone in bag on boat and it capsized and phone warranty DID say 'water damage' but after getting the gift card for exact purchase amount back, the warranty website says 'no open protections' anymore.

No, most warranties do not cover overclocking, read up if you are not sure. Yes, very often manufacturers ''advertise'' overclocking and provide tools to do so, at the same time exempting themselves from providing warranty for products that result in malfunctioning due to overclocking. Depending on who gives you a warranty (merchant or manufacturer) and who performs the checking on what's wrong with the card it may or may not be found that the card was overclocked (there are ways of finding it out if the overclocking is what resulted in breaking the card).
