Each coin has its own prerequisites and requirements for mining, and we need at least the name of a coin to even be able to decide what you should buy or what you shouldn't. For the most part, avoid coins that have ASICS on them- all of the X- series algorithm based coins, Quark, and a few others. Other than that, it's just GPU mining, and for that cards like the RX 480 are best for mining in most scenarios. Nvidia cards don't do nearly as well.
