Pools are a group of miners that work together to solve the block.  The reward is split amongst the miners.  Because the chances of finding a block by yourself are remote (unless you happen to have petahash of gear), you join a pool.

Jonny's Pool - Mine with us and help us grow!  Support a pool that supports Bitcoin, not a hardware manufacturer's pockets!  No SPV cheats.  No empty blocks.
