Smog grounds flights

Thick, grey smog fell over Beijing on Tuesday, choking China's capital in a haze that spurred authorities to cancel flights and close some highways in emergency measures to cut down on air pollution.

Beijing and much of industrial northern China are in the midst of a "red alert," the highest level in China's four-tiered pollution warning system. The red alert affected 460 million people, according to Greenpeace East Asia, which calculated that about 200 million people were living in areas that had experienced levels of air pollution more than 10 times above the guideline set by the World Health Organization.

Quote
Members of the public closely watch levels of PM2.5, particles measuring 2.5 microns across that are easily inhaled and damage lung tissue. The World Health Organization designates the safe level for the tiny, poisonous particles at 25 micrograms per cubic meter. On Tuesday morning, the PM2.5 reading in Beijing climbed above 300. In many northern Chinese cities, the reading has exceeded 500 micrograms per cubic meter.

State media reported that 169 flights have been cancelled at Beijing Capital International Airport, where visibility fell at one point to 300 metres (984 feet). Sections of Beijing's sixth ring road, the outermost highway encircling the city of more than 20 million people, were shut down in a bid to keep cars off the roads.

Authorities have even removed charcoal grills from restaurants and banned spray painting in parts of the city, state media reported.

China has long faced some of the worst air pollution in the world, blamed on its reliance of coal for energy and factory production, as well as a surplus of older, less efficient cars on its roads. Beijing and other cities have tried to improve air quality by switching power plants from coal to natural gas and rolling out fleets of electric buses and taxis.

But despite its public commitment to reduce carbon emissions, China remains the world's largest producer and consumer of coal, with plans to build new factories and increase production. Government officials, facing rising energy prices earlier this year, lifted caps on production days for many mines.

Since the red alert went into effect, more than 700 companies stopped production in Beijing and traffic police were restricting drivers by monitoring their license plate numbers. Dozens of cities closed schools and took other emergency measures.

"The smog has serious repercussions on the lungs and the respiratory system, and it also influences the health of future generations, so under a red alert, it is safer to stay at home rather than go to school," said Li Jingren, a 15-year-old high school student in Beijing, on Monday.

In nearby Tianjin, authorities cancelled 350 flights and closed all highways in the municipality. Public transportation services were increased as restrictions on cars were imposed.

Authorities in the northern province of Hebei ordered coal and cement plants to temporarily shut down or reduce production. Elsewhere, hospitals prepared teams of doctors to handle an expected surge in cases of pollution-related illnesses.

"If you are tracking back to the first day of this episode, you can see that the layer of the smog (in Beijing) is moving slowly from the south to the urban area in Beijing and then to the north," said Dong Liansai, a climate campaigner with Greenpeace in Beijing. "You can easily find the large deployment (of smog) in the regions south of Beijing."

On Sunday, news websites said the number of children being taken to Beijing hospitals with breathing trouble soared. Photos showed waiting rooms crowded with parents carrying children who wore face masks.

The alert is expected to end Wednesday.

WOW HOLY FUCK !

I knew it was getting bad but damn it's getting silly over there  Cry

Anyone have any figures on what percentage of the smog should be blamed on Bitcoin?

I know much of the mining is powered from Hydro, but that is less power coming from the hydro plants requiring the coal plants to make up the difference.

I'm sure you could look at the hashrate coming from China and estimate the power consumption and compare to the consumption of the entire country.

World Bank as early as 1997 pointed out that China's environmental pollution continues to cause the death of residents and a variety of chronic diseases, including air pollution every year leading to hundreds of thousands of people died of related diseases." Fog and haze in eastern China triggered renewed concern in the world." Financial Times columnist Tim Ha Forde pointed out earlier this year: China is not a democracy, which to some extent weaken its citizens require cleaner air power."

And now i can see why people buy cans of air from other countries.
For a while when they did that only certain cars could drive on these days and not other days their skys got really clear.
I wounder if they will continue doing so to cut down on pollution and to make the air quality better.

I made a topic here before talking about the Chinese immigrants that come to my Canadian town / city.
I said it was pretty fucked up and sort of disturbing seeing these people wearing masks around my town.
..because we in BC Canada have pretty damn good air quality (unless we get forest fires)

So yeah holy shit.. you know it's pretty fucked the fuck up bad when the population have to walk around with what we here consider to be a "painters mask".
The kind of thing a person uses when working with infectious disease victims etc.
Or when cleaning out asbestos from old buildings.

..not when going for a walk around town.

See ?

This is why i rail on bitching about what the majority do in the Altcoin scene does.
PEOPLE ..plow on with horrendous self destructive behavior.

If they can they will.. ALWAYS !

Ya but it's China's fault for cutting the competition.
They take out the legs of American companies by offering competing products for fractions of the cost.
Outsourcing of all kinds is the back bone of the American economy and why is that ?

I seen a show with Mike Rowe called "Somebodies gotta do it"
where he did an episode on Bobble Head toy figures.
He pointed out how all the presidents have tons of them.. ALL MADE IN CHINA

Then he interviewed the guy that is pretty much the only American company doing it..
The guy said it cost them close to $100 to make one.
China ? 15 cents ?

There is a reason China's economy eclipsed the USA's as largest in 2013.
And it is because of Smog.. tanks rolling over citizens.. Censorship.. and cheap bobble heads LOL
Oh and people jumping off the roof off Foxcon plants (before they put in nets)

Americans are not forcing the China to put 8 year old children in a Nike plant making shoes.

Just good thing Rolando didn't sign to play there or his flight might of crashed flying there then there would be one less footballer that died this year. Undecided
Just remember it could happen, just look at the whole team of Brazilian's professional team that died in one just a over a month ago. Cry

And who provides them with the most business in the world.
Who sales them a lot of coal well we do, that's our second largest importer of coal after India.

The world is just as much of a problem as china is when it come to pollution usa is either first or second.
Only reason we don't see as bad of smog is we have less people and our people aren't as condensed.

We all complain about them and what they do but we still buy everything from them...
