Snow in the SAHARA: Desert sees snow for the FIRST time in 37 years

Amateur photographer Karim Bouchetata took incredible pictures of snow covering the sand in the small Saharan desert town of Ain Sefra, Algeria, yesterday afternoon.

He captured the amazing moment snow fell on the red sand dunes in the world's largest hot desert for the first time in 37 years.

Snow was last seen in Ain Sefra on February 18, 1979, when the snow storm lasted just half an hour.

This time the snow stayed for a day in the town, which is around 1000 metres above sea level and surrounded by the Atlas Mountains.

Karim said: "Everyone was stunned to see snow falling in the desert, it is such a rare occurrence.

"It looked amazing as the snow settled on the sand and made a great set of photos.

I think president Trump will stop climate science funding and redirect all that research money to fossil fuel subsidies

You are using a few points, taken out of context to claim that there is no global warming. I agree that this is the first time that snowfall is occurring in Ain Sefra since 1979. But you are carefully omitting the fact that before 1979, the occurrences of snowfall were much more frequent.

I agree, snow in the desert is a natural anomaly. But I still do not see any change in the direction of warming. Maybe somewhere at the poles it is noticeable, but I don't see it. Moreover, this year winter began early and colder.

Yeah i agree this isn' t the first time we' ve had snow on deserts but as you've said climate change is as real as it gets. Stronger typhoons and hurricanes, ice caps melting, rising sea level, extreme weather changes and all. And we' re not taking this seriously enough and doing enough to slow this down i think. And if this continues, the scary part is that we may be primed for a global catastrophe

Geological history suggests that some cycles last a long time. All this climate change has happened before.

For example, mammoths have been found in the northern lands of Siberia, frozen in the ice, and frozen so rapidly that their flesh is almost edible today, after thousands of years. What can freeze something as big as a mammoth so rapidly that it doesn't have a chance to decay at all?

While the freezing of the mammoths must have been fast, the length of time they were frozen was long. The point? We don't really know how the climate cycles work, or why.

You're right, the signs of global warming can be seen in every country. The weather is changing every year. And scientists do not want it explains, as the government did not react to it.

Actually I work in the government. And the government has been making plans and green programs, integrating development and environment. But sad to say it is not on the level of the government that has the problem it is on the public. The government cannot keep up to monitor every single individuals on their country, burning of plastics , cutting of trees and many more. And another sad thing, governments main allocation is on welfare programs such as education, end of poverty, malnutrition, hunger crisis, rebellions and other. With such short funds to hire technology and manpower the government cannot keep up.

But the United Nations has made a move to save mother earth, in coordination with many countries they are trying to lessen pollution through some proper planning and laws. Today the public cannot feel it since the implementation is slower and it needs more time, money and effort to have a huge impact.

But anyway, it depends on what country you are now. Remember, the change starts within the home.
