Really what's the speed of a typical single ASIC?
Buying some just for mining bitcoin actually worth it?

From what I read around the place it seems to be a decent investment and according to the multitude of calculators out there the return is totally worth it.

Pretty bad there is not many out there available at the moment, the only ones seem to be avalon that kept their promise and actually started sending devices out not like some (looking at you BFL!)

If you had one today, absolutely, the problem is if you bought one today you likely won't have it for 3-6 months and by that time the difficulty will adjust such that it might not pay off.  I'd suggest waiting until either Avalon or BFL gets mostly up to date on their shipments and reassess the situation then.
